These courses focus on the design and construction of clothes.

Fashion designers create clothing for every occasion and lifestyle. Explore a career as a fashion designer, assistant designer, stylist, or fashion executive.

HAP 017 Draping for Fashion Design
Fashion designers use draping to create patterns for their designs. You will learn pinning and shaping techniques by manipulating muslin on a dress form. *Projects and class schedule may be adjusted to reflect the abilities and pace of the students in the course

HAP 024 Introduction to the Sewing Machine
You will learn the basics of sewing on an industrial machine and serger while learning basic stitches, seams and hems and how to cut fabric. Projects will include a drop-shoulder top and drawstring bottoms. *Projects and class schedule may be adjusted to reflect the abilities and pace of the students in the course.   

HAP 025 Sewing for Fashion Designers
(For students attending 9th and 10th grades) 
You will learn the basics of sewing on an industrial machine, how to make several different seams, seam finishes and hems, and how to lay out and cut a pattern. Various projects will be included in the course, such as an apron, a blouse, and other basic sewing projects.

HAP 026 Sewing for Fashion Designers
(For students attending 11th or 12th)
You will learn the basics of sewing on an industrial machine, how to make several different seams, seam finishes and hems, and how to lay out and cut a pattern. Various projects will be included in the course, such as an apron, a blouse, and other basic sewing projects.

HAP 030 Basic Sewing: Simple Dresses
You'll learn the basics of how to lay out and cut a pattern and sew a dress and/or skirt using an industrial machine, how to make various seams, seam finishes, hems, zippers, and closures. Each student will begin with the basic dress/skirt pattern and may customize as time permits. Additional projects may be added as the student advances within the course. *Projects and class schedule may be adjusted to reflect the abilities and pace of the students in the course.  

HAP 031 Basic Sewing: Shorts and Pants
You'll learn the basics of how to lay out and cut a pattern and sew structured shorts or pants using an industrial machine, how to make various seams, seam finishes, and hems and zippers, and closures.  Each student will begin with the basic "bottoms" pattern and may customize as time permits. Additional projects may be added as the student advances within the course. *Projects and class schedule may be adjusted to reflect the abilities and pace of the students in the course.    

HAP 032 Basic Sewing: Urban Sportswear
You'll learn the basics of 
how to lay out and cut a pattern and sew projects such as a hooded sweatshirt, open cardigan, and/or joggers using an industrial machine, as well as how to make various seams, seam finishes, and hems . Each student will begin with the basic patterns and may customize as time permits. Additional projects can be added as the student advances within the course. *Projects and class schedule may be adjusted to reflect the abilities and pace of the students in the course.    

HAP 100 Exploring Careers in Fashion Design
Every fashion designer's journey is different. There are many paths to becoming a successful designer: working for a global brand, selling direct to consumer, working for a private label, designing for a major label, or becoming an independent designer. You'll explore the many different career possibilities in fashion through field trips, individual and group assignments, and insight from industry experts. (You can skip this summer class if you've already taken HAP 101)

HAP 101 Introduction to the Fashion Design Industry
Explore the exciting careers in Fashion Design: Independent Designer, Product Developer, Design House Designer, etc. Learn the differences and the skills needed for each and how to navigate a successful career in the direction you choose! You will experience the industry through field trips, individual assignments, and classroom group projects.

HAP 102 Sewing for Designers: Basics
Using a sewing machine doesn't have to be scary. Build your confidence and skills by creating a sample of various hems and seams on an industrial sewing machine. By the end of this course you'll be able to successfully create a simple top or drawstring pants. Note: The projects and class schedule may be adjusted to reflect the abilities and pace of the students in course. (You can skip this summer class if you've already taken HAP 024)

HAP 103 Sewing for Designers: Basic Dress
Make your own dress! Using an industrial sewing machine, you'll explore the professional techniques necessary to take your garment from pattern to completion. Start with your favorite cotton fabric, then customize and embellish your original dress as time permits. Note: The projects and class schedule may be adjusted to reflect the abilities and pace of the students in the course. (You can skip this summer class if you've already taken HAP 030)

HAP 104 Sewing for Designers: Basic Pants
Make your own pants! Using an industrial sewing machine, you'll explore the professional techniques necessary to take your garment from pattern to completion. Start with your favorite cotton fabric, then customize and embellish your pants as time permits. Note: The projects and class schedule may be adjusted to reflect the abilities and pace of the students in the course. (You can skip this summer class if you've already taken HAP 031)

HAP 105 Sewing for Designers: Basic Sportswear
Make your own hooded sweatshirt or joggers! Using an industrial sewing machine, you'll explore the professional techniques necessary to take your garment from pattern to completion. Start with your favorite cotton fabric, then customize and embellish your piece as time permits. Note: The projects and class schedule may be adjusted to reflect the abilities and pace of the students in the course. (You can skip this summer class if you've already taken HAP 032)

HAP 106 Sewing for Designers: Advanced Jacket
*Prerequisite: HAP 025 or HAP 026 or HMW 157 or HPM 069 or HPM 070 or HPM 071 or HAP 154 or HAP 103 or HAP 104 or HAP 105
Make your own denim jacket! Using an industrial sewing machine, you'll explore the professional techniques necessary to take your garment from pattern to completion. Start with your favorite cotton fabric, then customize and embellish your piece as time permits. Note: The projects and class schedule may be adjusted to reflect the abilities and pace of the students in the course. (You can skip this summer class if you've already taken HAP 153)

HAP 107 Draping Techniques
Draping is the hands-on, three-dimensional process of creating a garment. You'll use muslin to develop the structure of your garment design by pinning and marking it on a dress form. From these pieces the designer creates the final sewing pattern. Note: The number of garments completed are up to the abilities of each student, so projects and class schedule may be adjusted to reflect the abilities and pace of the students in the course. (You can skip this summer class if you've already taken HAP 017)

HAP 153 Intermediate Sewing: Jean Jackets 
*Prerequisite: HAP 025 or HAP 026 or HMW 157 or HPM 069 or HPM 070 or HPM 071 or HAP 154
Improve your expertise by sewing a more advanced projects using industrial and home embroidery machines. You'll create and execute your own jacket, staring from the classic cropped jacket pattern. Each student will begin with the same basic pattern and will customize as time permits. Finished jackets may be constructed in a variety of cotton fabrics, not just denim.  *Basic sewing required. 

HAP 154 Intermediate Sewing: Alternative Silhouettes
Learn approaches to fit and construction unique to gender-neutral fashions. Students will research fabrics, learn grading and sizing, and construct 1-3 advanced garments based on their progress in the class.

*To waive the prerequisite for course HAP 017, HAP 153 or HAP 154, you will need to submit an email to [email protected] stating that you have the necessary skills for this advanced class. Please make sure to include your full name and date of birth. Abilities to include: sewing a perfectly straight hem, zipper, and familiarity with an industrial sewing machine. Samples of sewing projects may also be submitted.
