Stylists are a vital link connecting concept, design, presentation, and finished product. They not only define trends but visually edit concepts. The BFA program explores trend research, design concepts, aspects of product design, and the preparation of presentation boards.

Eligible applicants must have completed coursework in the area of art/design prior to applying to the Fabric Styling BFA. Please review the full list of required courses on the Fabric Styling eligibility web site.

Please submit a short essay and 6 to 11 images.

Fabric Styling BFA Essay

Please respond thoughtfully and note that your answer does not replace the essay that you are required to submit as part of your FIT/SUNY application.

  1. In 350 words or less, explain what inspires you creatively, how you became interested in Fabric Styling, and why you want to study in this program.

Portfolio

Your portfolio must include 6 to 11 images.

Part One: Mood board (1-2 images)

Create an 11"x 17" digital or physical mood board depicting a future trend or forecast for home furnishings or apparel.

The board should be well designed with interesting imagery that reflects the color, season, and target market. Submit one image of the complete mood board. Please include one detail or close-up image if needed (optional).

The board must include a minimum of three sources from the categories listed below. Please outline the sources used in the SlideRoom description box.

  1. Your own photography
  2. Your own illustrations/drawings or other art
  3. Fabric or color swatches
  4. Typography
  5. Online images

Part Two: Photo (1-3 photos)

Set up a still life or style someone you know to illustrate the trend or forecast from your mood board and take a photo with your phone. Pay attention to the location/background, props, clothing, color, and lighting.

Submit one photo of the complete still life or model. Please include 1 to 2 detail shots, if needed (optional). 

Part Three: Additional Work (4-6 images)

Please include 4 to 6 pieces of artwork in any medium (ex. painting, drawing, photography, mixed media)  and/or design work (ex. mood boards, graphic design, illustration, product design, or fashion design)

Provide 6-11 items. Images (up to 5MB each) and PDFs (up to 10MB each)
