Footwear and Accessories Design AAS

Fall Semester

Deadline: February 1 - SlideRoom Fee (USD): $10

The Footwear and Accessories Design program is dedicated to providing students with a broad-based liberal arts education combined with an effective and efficient practical career-oriented preparation for the accessories industry (inclusive but not limited to handbags, footwear, performance footwear, belts, small leather goods). Students develop aesthetic, intellectual, analytical, and technology abilities. Our programs stress the required disciplines of traditional design and technical skill sets along with product development, creative problem solving, and commercial application skills.

The Footwear and Accessories Design portfolio consists of two parts:  a written essay and portfolio work. We want to understand your creative process in both visual and written components. We ask that you put thought into your process and work to design original creative work that reflects your unique self-expression and special quirks. We want to see who you are in your design process.

You will submit a short essay, 9 to 12 accessories renderings, and 5 to 7 samples of additional creative work.

Footwear and Accessories Design AAS Essay

Please respond thoughtfully and note that your answers do not replace the essay that you are required to submit as part of your FIT/SUNY application.

If you had the opportunity to meet one artist or designer from the past or present, who would you choose?  What three questions would you ask this person and why? (Please answer in 350 words or less.)

Portfolio

Part 1: Footwear and Accessories Renderings (9-12 pieces)

Submit a selection of 9 to 12 examples of your best original work that represents bag, shoe and belt designs as scanned images or high quality photographs. One submission should be a still life of a shoe and bag selected from your closet. Use any black pen or pencil to sketch the still life. Submit a photograph of your still life and one scanned image of the sketch.

  • Each piece can stand alone or be part of a coordinated collection within the 9 to 12 pieces.
  • Explain your inspiration(s) with photo images, magazine tear sheets or short narrative(s).
  • Identify the color medium(s) you chose and include material or leather swatch(es) on the front of each sketch.

Part 2: Creative Work (5-7 pieces)

Submit 5 to 7 examples of actual creative art samples that you have made. Include 2 to 3 pages from your sketchbook to give insight to your process of research, thinking, and exploration.

  • The work may include assignment-based projects, self-directed work or pieces of a collaborative nature in the areas of accessories, paintings, ceramics, photography, etc.
  • The samples should demonstrate knowledge of a creative skill set.
  • Originality, creativity, and design aesthetic are valued.
  • Write and submit a brief description for each of these images.
