Success in the Visual Design World

Chen is a visual designer at Havas, one of the largest marketing communications agencies in the world. She’s worked both as an art director and a visual designer, and here she gives her take on the differences between the roles.

“An art director often works with a copywriter to come up with a campaign or concept and create a pitch deck so we can present to the client. It’s mostly mock-ups of what an idea could be so we can sell it in. Once that happens, it’s a designer’s job to bring it to life. Sometimes an art director overlaps and does create the end product, but a lot of times they’ll bring visual or digital designers in to executeespecially if it’s not just social media posts or standard banners but something more elaborate like a microsite or an interactive experience.

What drew me to art direction was being able to think about the future and ask, ‘What are consumers going to like?’ With visual design, instead of always concepting the new campaign, you’re able to see the final form. I love product design and being able to create brand systems for clients.”
