Math Placement Tests & Exemptions

Mathematics proficiency is a graduation requirement for an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree at FIT. Placement into the proper math course will help you successfully master the skills needed to do well in all FIT majors.

At FIT, placement into the appropriate math course is determined by the SAT and/or ACT math exams. Placement can be determined by reviewing the information below. Please have your SAT or ACT scores sent electronically to FIT:

If you have not taken either of these exams in the past five years, you must take the FIT Math Placement Exam before registering for math courses.

SAT Math

If you score 520 and below, choose one:

  • MA 080 — Fundamentals of Mathematics
  • MA 081 — Mathematical Literacy

If you score 530 and above, choose one:

  • MA 142 — Geometry and the Art of Design
  • MA 161 — Mathematical Ideas
  • MA 222 — Statistical Analysis

ACT Math

If you score 22 and below. choose one:

  • MA 080 — Fundamentals of Mathematics
  • MA 081 — Mathematical Literacy

FIT Math Placement Exam

The FIT Math Placement Exam is an Accuplacer exam that consists of two sections: Next Generation Arithmetic and Next Generation Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics. Your score will be the sum of the two sections.

If you score 519 and below, choose one: 

  • MA 080 — Fundamentals of Mathematics
  • MA 081 — Mathematical Literacy

  • MA 161 — Mathematical Ideas
  • MA 222 — Statistical Analysis

Exemptions

Bachelor of Science Majors in the School of Business and Technology

Bachelor of Science students in the School of Business and Technology who need math proficiency should take a section of MA 080 - Fundamentals of Mathematics that is designated as an MA080-COMPUTER-BASED section.

Other Possible Exemptions

  • a grade of C or better in college algebra, quantitative methods, pre-calculus, or calculus taken at another accredited college or university
  • passing grades in equivalent developmental math courses offered at another accredited college or university

International Students

Since you do not take the SAT or ACT exam, you will need to take the FIT Math Placement Exam before registering for any math and science courses. See: International Students
