The Department of Public Safety Office is a resource for persons who have lost or misplaced property on the FIT campus and acts as the central "lost and found" for FIT.

What is found property?

Found property includes:

  • Lost property: property belonging to another person.

What kind of property can be turned in?

Public Safety cannot accept all found property.

Examples of accepted  items: phones, laptops, tablets, electronic devices, portable speakers, wallets, purses, keys, eyeglasses, sunglasses, jewelry, books, umbrellas backpacks

Examples of items we won't accept: food, flammable items (lighters, vape pens, etc.), recreational items (soccer balls, frisbees, baseballs, etc.), personal grooming items (combs, brushes, bows, ribbons, scrunchies, etc.), intentionally abandoned property (electronic equipment that obviously does not work, damaged furniture, items placed by trash containers for disposal, etc.)

Lost and Found Procedures

These are the questions we receive most often about lost and found property. If you need more help, contact the Department of Public Safety at (212) 217-4999 or [email protected].

If you find lost or abandoned property on campus:

  • Bring the item(s) to the Department of Public Safety at 236 West 27th Street, first floor, if you can.
  • Report the found property to any Public Safety patrol or lobby officer.

Report your lost property to the Department of Public Safety. You will be asked to fill out a form to provide your name, contact information, and a description of the missing item(s) so that you can be notified if/when your items are found.

A link to the form can be found at the top or this page. If you report your lost property in person, via phone, or via email, you will be directed to the same form.

You may claim your property in person at the Department of Public Safety at 236 West 27th Street, first floor. You will be required to inventory your property, and provide your ID. Public Safety will make a copy of your ID and require your signature before releasing the property.

Cash, credit cards, wallets, jewelry, and other valuables are secured in a Public Safety vault and may only be claimed Monday through Friday between 9 am and 4 pm.

Found property is kept for a maximum of 45 days. If the item is unclaimed after 45 days, it will be disposed of or donated in accordance with the Department of Public Safety’s standard operating procedures for Found Property.
