Privacy

What you talk about with your counselor is CONFIDENTIAL. That means that we will not tell your parents or professors anything you discuss during sessions. If you want any information released to anyone outside Counseling Services, you must give your written permission. Furthermore, your counseling records will never become part of your academic or administrative records at FIT.

There are, however, important legally mandated exceptions to confidentiality. These include:

  1. Notification of relevant others when a clinician judges that a client is in immediate danger to self or others.
  2. The clinician must report any incidence of suspected child abuse, neglect, or maltreatment in order to protect the children involved.
  3. In legal cases, clinicians or clinical records may be subpoenaed by the court.

As in any professional office, cases may be confidentially discussed with our consulting psychiatrist or among Counseling Center clinicians. These individuals are considered part of the clinical team and help us to deliver quality care. If you have special concerns about privacy or confidentiality, please discuss this during your first appointment.
