HFM 060 Fashion Forecasting: Seeing into the Future 

By analyzing consumers past buying patterns, identifying emerging trends in retail and on the streets, and recognizing current cultural influences, a fashion forecaster helps designers, product developers, and merchandisers see into the future. Being able to predict next year's fashion trends is a valuable and marketable skill. Learn how to conduct research, record observations, use the tools of the forecasting industry, and identify key target markets. HFM 064 The Ins and Outs of Fashion Merchandising

Learn how color, fabrics, consumer motivation, sales, and fashion publications affect the art of merchandising. You'll analyze merchandising strategies by visiting retail stores and get an overview of historic style trends by touring the costume collection of The Museum at FIT. HAP 017 Introduction to Draping for Fashion Design 

*Prerequisite: HAP 026 or HAP 025 or HAP 153 or HAP 154 or HPM 069 or HPM 070 or HPM 071 or HMW 151

Learn to design clothing and make patterns for your designs by draping and shaping muslin on a dress form. You'll learn basic draping skills, as well as creative variations on several bodices and skirts.

HAP 025 Sewing for Fashion Designers 

(For students attending 9th and 10th grades)  

You'll learn the basics of sewing on an industrial machine, how to make several different seams, seam finishes and hems, and how to lay out and cut a pattern. Various projects will be part of the course, such as an apron, a blouse, and other basic sewing projects.

HAP 153 Intermediate Sewing and Embroidery Design

*Prerequisite: HAP 025 or HAP 026 or HMW 157 or HPM 069 or HPM 070 or HPM 071 or HAP 154

Improve your expertise by sewing advanced projects using a variety of machines. You'll create and execute your own embroidery designs, using machine and hand embroidery to decorate your designs. Projects include an embroidered T-shirt and jean jacket. *Basic sewing required.  HAP 153 Gallery

HAR 016 Creating the Fashion Figure 

If you dream of becoming a fashion designer, merchandiser, or stylist, this course can help make that dream a reality. Learn the elements of a basic fashion design sketch and start to develop your own women's wear croquis. This course teaches you to understand, analyze, and draw the front view female fashion figure. You'll learn how to develop your design ideas as fashion sketches and explore the basic silhouettes used in the fashion design industry. HAR 016 Gallery

HTS 154 Screenprinting T-Shirts

Learn to create your own screenprinted designs and transfer them from paper to screen to shirt, using basic and experimental screenprinting techniques. You'll conceive a design, prepare a screen, mix pigments, and screenprint on T-shirts in a traditional screen-printing studio environment. HTS 154 Gallery   

HAD 101 The Principles of Design 

It all starts somewhere! In order to succeed in majors such as Communication Design, Advertising, Graphic Design, Packaging Design, and Spatial Experience Design all students must know the Principles of Design. In this beginner course, you'll learn by executing a variety of fun projects that teach the principles of design composition and layout, color, texture, and typography. HFA 024 Basic Life Drawing

Study basic anatomy and proportion as you develop your drawing ability. You'll sketch a live nude model using quick-and extended-study techniques. HFA 024 Gallery

HFA 145 Design/Composition/Color Theory

Discover the principles of design and color theory as you create drawings, paintings, and collages. You'll also explore the roles design and color play in fashion, architecture, advertising, fine arts, and graphic, interior, and surface design. HFA 145 Gallery

HFA 148 Fine Arts Portfolio

Create a first-class portfolio, or perfect your existing portfolio to prepare for college review committees. Develop new skills as you create drawings from live nude models, still lifes, and interiors using perspective drawing techniques. All drawing media are encouraged. The instructor will assess your current work to determine what you need to create or improve upon. Please bring one or more samples of the following to the first class: a portrait, a painting, mixed media, art from your imagination, a contour drawing, and various works from observation. Include both color and black and white examples. You may bring your original works or you can bring photographed images to show the professor.  HFA 148 Gallery

HID 021 Introduction to Technical Drawing and Spatial Planning (Level 1)

Students will learn traditional technical drawing techniques using the tools of the trade (T-square, architectural scale ruler, triangles, templates, etc.) with a focus on interior spaces. HIL 012 Drawing for Illustration

Get a feel for what it takes to become a professional illustrator while you improve your drawing skills, learn about materials and techniques, and build your portfolio. In this course, you'll draw from live models and still-life arrangements and work on specific projects such as magazine covers, posters, and book and editorial illustrations. HIL 012 Gallery

HIL 163 Anatomy  for Artists

This introductory course focuses on drawing the human body, skeleton, and related muscular systems. You'll use plaster casts, medical charts, videos, and direct model drawing to improve your skills. HPH 159 Digital Camera Use and Photography for the Beginner

This course will introduce students to the mechanics of a digital camera and professional photographic techniques including: F/stops, shutter speeds, lighting accommodations, depth of field, white balance, exposure settings, and the various types of digital files and RAW files. Highly recommended for students who have never taken a photography course before or who simply "point-and-shoot" their current digital images. HPH 159 Gallery

HPH 169 Fundamentals of Digital Photography and Photoshop

If you're an intermediate level photographer and are familiar with the techniques covered in HPH 159 (above) and are ready to focus on lighting, advanced camera techniques, and image sequencing, this course is for you. You'll also cover the basics of Adobe Photoshop, including image processing, photo retouching, and collage. Students must be comfortable with the digital camera to join this class. HPH 169 Gallery
