Many of FIT’s Toy Design students are hired by the company that sponsors their internship before they graduate. Some alumni have formed their own inventor groups and sold their ideas to major companies such as Mattel and Disney.
FIT graduates are employed as toy designers at Alex Global Products, Baby Gap, Colorforms, Crayola, DC Comics, Disney, Gund, Hallmark Licensing, Hasbro, IDEO, JAKKS Pacific, Just Play, K’NEX, LEGO, Little Tikes, Lucas Arts, Mattel/Fisher-Price, Mega Brands, MGA Entertainment, NBC Universal, Nickelodeon, Pixar Animation Studios, Razor USA, Sesame Street Workshop, Spin Master, TOMY, Toys “R” Us and Wham-O.
Bringing Toys Alive
As director of product design and development for Mattel, Tara McGrath’s job is to bring action figures to life for human children, such as those found in Toy Story. Her portfolio was reviewed by Toy Design chair Judy Ellis, who convinced her to become part of the program’s inaugural class.
