Shelter in Place
When a shelter-in-place notification is received and you are on campus:
Shut and lock all doors.
Stay away from doors and windows.
Turn off lights, if safe to do so.
Take shelter in a closet, under a desk, or other appropriate area.
Do NOT call FIT Public Safety; this will tie up phone lines. Public Safety or the police department may call your room with additional information and instructions, if appropriate.
Wait for any instructions from emergency responders.
Do not the exit room until given notice by Public Safety or the police department.
Assist disabled persons in getting to a safe shelter-in-place location, if necessary.
- ASK someone with a disability how you can help BEFORE giving assistance. Ask how they can best be assisted and whether there are any special considerations or items that need to come with them.
- Get the attention of a person with a hearing disability by touch and eye contact. Clearly state the problem. Gestures and pointing are helpful, but be prepared to write a brief statement if the person does not seem to understand.
- Offer visual instructions to a person with a hearing disability to advise of the safest route or direction.
Follow instructions from FIT and/or emergency officials.
