HAP 025: Sewing for Fashion Designers Grades 9 & 10 (Updated October 2019)
All supplies for projects will be discussed in class.

   Shorts Project: 

  • 1 ¼ yards of 45” wide cotton fabric or cotton polyester blend

  • 1 yard of decorative elastic (1 ½” wide)

  • 100% cotton or cotton/poly blend thread to match

  Shirt  Project:

  • 1 ½ yards of 45” wide cotton fabric or cotton polyester blend

  • 2 yards elastic (width size will be discussed in class)

  • 100% cotton or cotton/poly blend thread to match

     Apron  Project:

  • 1 pair of old jeans to be cut up

  • 2 yards of trimming (½” wide for each apron)

  • 2 yards of trim (1” wide)

    To Students: The supplies will cost about $60, fabric purchases must be made at a fabric store. Other purchases can be made at the college bookstore in the basement between the A & B buildings of FIT

     

HAP 026: Sewing for Fashion Designers Grades 11 & 12  (Updated October 2019)
All supplies for projects will be discussed in class.

  • Apron Project:
    -1 ¼ yards woven fabric 
    -matching thread
    -2 ½ yards of 1” wide (or wider) ribbon for neck and side ties (or fabric scraps can be used), -trim if desired  

  • Pant Project:  
    -2/1/2 yards of woven fabric
    matching thread
    1 yard of 1-1 ½” wide elastic

  • Shirt Project:  
    2 yards cotton fabric
    matching thread
    1 ½ yards of ¼” or ½” wide elastic.

  • Optional Projects for Advanced Students: 1 ½- 2 ½ yards cotton fabric, matching thread, and 1 yard of elastic.

  • Composition notebook

  • Fashion tear sheets from magazines (clothing, shoes, jewelry, bags, etc.)
  • Favorite items tear sheets magazines ( make-up, cameras, animals, etc.)

HAP 101: Introduction to the Fashion Industry  (Updated June 2019)

  • Notebook and/or journal (11x14) for ideas/concepts and for cumulative project development
  • Pen and pencil
  • Art pad (11x14) for project development (if only using notebook above)
  • Additional Supplies: Folder for handouts, colored pencils/markers/pastels, tape and/or glue, magazines/internet images or tear sheets/wipes as needed, fabric swatches, scissors/stapler, Metro Card with $10-15 or cash to get a Metro Card. We will walk to as many field trips as possible.

    Supplies can be bought in the FIT bookstore or at Staples, Target, or the local Art Supply Store. Anything more will be minimal. Overall cost $25 max, plus transportation.

 

HAP 153: Intermediate Sewing and Embroidery Design  (Updated June 2019)

  •  Notebook& pen
  • 2 Large spools of cotton thread to match fabric, other colors for special machines if desired 2
  •  Yards 60" wide OR (2.5 yards 45" wide) woven medium weight cotton fabric (denim, twill, corduroy or chambray) for jacket
  • 1 Large spool of cotton OR cotton wrapped polyester thread to match fabric
  • 1 Spool of contrast color thread for topstitching if desired
  • 9 Buttons 5/8" for jackets 
  • Hanger
  • 1Yard woven fusible interfacing
  • 1 1/2 Yards cotton jersey knit fabric for t-shirts
  • Small scraps of cotton fabric and trim for appliques
  • Fabric must be purchased at a fabric store.

 
HAP 154  
All fabrics for projects should be woven cotton or linen type fabric with no spandex/ no stretch. If you use plaids or stripes or one-way fabric prints or textures, you will need to purchase additional fabric. You may also decide to repurpose some sheets, previously worn garments, other for some creative details such as pockets or trims.

  • Zippers:  
    • 7” regular dress zipper
    • 7” decorative metal zipper
    • optional – separating jacket zipper, 8” long
  • Pant/ Shorts Project:
    • Pants: 2½ yards woven fabric 45” wide – 2 yards of 45” if you are short or small in stature, more if you are tall); if fabric is 60” wide, you will need about 2 ¼ yds. If you are tall, add to this.
  • Shorts: 1 3/4 yd. of 45” wide or 1 3/8 yd. 60” wide, less for smaller sizes
    • Matching thread (preferred)
    • 1 yard of 1-1½” wide elastic
  • Top 1 Project:
    •  2 3/4 yd. of 44-45” wide or 2 ¼ yd of 60” wide woven cotton fabric
    • Matching thread
    • Fusible interfacing (instructor will provide this for Summer 2017)
  • Top 2 Project (recommend this is softer than Top 1 fabric):
    • 2 5/8 yd. 45” wide or 2 3/8 yd. of 60” wide cotton fabric
    • Matching thread
    • Shirring thread
    • Fusible interfacing (instructor will provide this for Summer 2017)
  • Optional projects for more advanced students:
    • 1½-2½” yards cotton fabric; if making yoga/ harem pants, need 2 yards
    • Matching thread
    • 1 yard elastic at least 1 – 1 ½“ wide

Note: Thread and other notions may be purchased in the FIT Campus Store located in the basement between the “A” building/Dubinsky Student Center and the “B” building/ Business & Liberal Arts Center or check store resource list provided by instructor. Fabrics are not available for purchase at the FIT Campus Store; there are a few stores near FIT.  How much you spend will of course depend upon what you buy.  However, anticipate that the above will likely cost at least $50.
