Unity Essentials: Intro to Interactive Environments

This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of Unity, the industry-standard cross-platform game engine. It is being used for building interactive 3D environments for video gaming, film, automotive, architecture, engineering, real estate, and construction. It is an essential skill for many industries since Unity can be used to create three-dimensional, two-dimensional, virtual reality, and augmented reality games, as well as simulations and other experiences.
This course is a Synchronous and Collaborative Remote Experiential Learning™ (SCREL™) Program. Unlike traditional distance and online learning models, SCREL enables real-time interactions between faculty, industry professionals. In addition, our intimate maximum class size of 14 students will enable in-depth discussions and exchange of ideas to maximize your learning experience and results.
This distance learning program is for anyone who wants to expand their creativity into the exciting field of interactive 3D environments. Prior coding experience is preferred but not required.

What You Will Learn
- Understanding the 3D environment of Unity: navigation, tools, simple modeling
- Creating a virtual walk-through gallery
- Controlling a game object: basic ideas of user input and system events
- Bringing video into Unity: designing a TV inside a game environment
- Introducing Bolt*: a C# editor that doesn’t require any programming background
- Presentation skills
Meet Our Faculty
Digital Artist and Chair of IMedia Arts Department, New Jersey City University
Marcin Ramocki is a Polish-born NY artist working with a variety of computer-centered media. His practice ranges from digital installations and online work to feature-length documentary movies. Thematically, these often revolve around conceptual portraiture, fascination by various social networks, and self-reflective commentary on the contemporary art world. He is best known for his documentary projects ”8 BIT” (2006) and ”Brooklyn DIY” (2009), as well as shorter digital forms like ”Virtual Singer” (2000), ”Torcito Project” (2005) or ”Blogger Skins” (2009). Marcin’s work has been shown at MoMa, Hirshhorn Museum, Pacific Film Archives, Anthology Film Archives, Art Futura, Wexner Center, ZKM, ACME Melbourne, Le Palais de Glace Buenos Aires and many more. He is a proud member of the online collective spiritsurfers.net and occasionally published texts related to digital media and internet-related art. Marcin teaches New Media art at New Jersey City University.

FIT’s SCREL programs were developed by award-winning faculty members from FIT’s Creative Technology & Design (CT&D) subject area and Center for Continuing and Professional Studies (CCPS). It provides a hands-on learning experience that simulates the workflow of online collaboration and global teamwork, which is becoming a standard in the contemporary creative industry.
Synchronous: Real-time remote lectures, demonstrations, and discussions for instant feedback and dynamic exchange of ideas.
Collaborative: Adaptation of industry-standard tools that enable real-time online collaboration and teamwork.
Experiential: Hands-on experiential and project-based learning in which students actively explore real-world problems and challenges and acquire a deeper understanding of the subject.
