The FAFSA Application

FAFSA applications are available for  both new and current FIT students for the the 2025-2026 Academic Year.  New students admitted to the Spring 2025 semester will  also need to apply for the 2024-2025 FAFSA application in order  to receive financial aid for Spring 2025. 

We will process applications for our students as the applications become available to Financial Aid Services. Below is the most current information for you to complete your Federal Student Aid and New York State Aid applications.

Financial Aid Application Steps

 

FAFSA Application Form:

You will use your 2023 tax information on the
2025-2026 FAFSA application for both student and parent(s).

For newly admitted student for Spring 2025 you will also apply for the 2024-2025 academic year to receive financial aid for this semester. You will use your 2022 tax information for both student and parent(s).

To access Financial Aid FERPA forms, loan requests, and any documents you have been instructed to download from Financial Aid Services.

 

Special Circumstances:

There may be situations when a student's true and current financial situation is not fully reflected by the questions on the FAFSA. These students may be considered on a case-by-case basis for a special circumstances review called "Professional Judgement" under the guidance of the U.S. Department of Education (ED). 

Beginning your Financial Aid Application Process

Currently there are two FAFSA applications available.

  • New students admitted  to the Fall 2025-2026 academic year need to complete the 2025-2026 FAFSA application.
  • New students admitted to the Spring 2025 semester will complete both the 2024-2025 and the 2025-2026 FAFSA applications.
  • Current FIT students continuting in their degree program will need to complete a FAFSA application every year.
  • New York State residents may also apply for the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) Grant and/or the New York State Excelsior Scholarship.

Both you and your contibutors, should have applied for an FSA ID 

Gather your application documents. The FAFSA will ask for information about you (your name, date of birth, address, etc.) and about your financial situation.  For more comprehensive steps and information you can go to our page Financial Aid Application Steps.

TAP (New York State Tuition Assistance Program)

The easiest way to apply for TAP is through the FAFSA. Make sure you have completed your FAFSA. New York State (NYS) residents attending NYS schools can link directly to the TAP application from the FAFSA submission confirmation page.

If you exit the FAFSA before you complete the TAP application, but your FAFSA includes your New York State address and college, NYS Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) will automatically receive your information.

HESC will then send you an email or postcard with directions for you to complete the TAP application online. 

FIT's New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) Codes are:

  • FIT  - Associate Degree students – 2070
  • FIT -  Bachelors Degree students – 0975

New York State Excelsior Scholarship

The Excelsior Scholarship Application deadline for Spring 2024-2025 Academic years ends February 3, 2025. If you would like to be notified by email and/or opt-in for text notification of  when the future applications will be available, you can sign up on  the Excelsior Scholarship Program link.

After you submit you completed FAFSA application for 2025-2026 you will receive and email confirming the receipt of you application and any information related to your eligibility for federal financial aid.  Included in your email will be your estimated Student Aid Index (SAI) and your estimated eligibility for Pell Grants.

Financial Aid Services may request documents and/or other information from you via mail and email. Please respond immediately to all requests to avoid delays. If you do not to respond to requests for information, your file will be made inactive and we will be unable to process your application until the documents are submitted. 

You may check your financial aid status and see any document requirements in the FIT portal MyFIT. Log in and view the Financial Aid Resources section. See instructions on how to view your messages and any other financial aid requirements.

You may be required to provide copies of tax returns for yourself and/or your parents, in addition to other income documentation. There may also be forms to fill out and return to Financial Aid Services. 

To view your requirements, download documents, and read any messages regarding your application at any time by logging in to MyFIT and completing the following steps.

  • Go to your Financial Aid card
  • Go to My Financial Aid Checklist
  • Check the drop down menu at the top right of the page to make sure you are on the Award by Aid Year - 2025-2026
  • Go to **The Status of Your Financial Aid Application**

If you were awarded for the academic year, your aid will be displayed in MyFIT Portal with an option for you to accept or decline these awards in order for them to become available to you.  Login to the MyFIT Portal

  • Go to your Financial Aid card
  • Go to My Financial Aid Checklist
  • Check the drop down menu at the top right of the page to make sure you are on the Award by Aid Year – 2025-2026
  • Go to the Offer tab at the top

If you qualify for Federal Work-Study and/or are interested in accepting federal loans (Direct Stafford Loans),  you must click on the “Offer” tab to accept these awards. If you do not want to accept your Federal Work-Study and/or federal loans, you can decline them on this same page.  

Any changes made after accepting or declining your federal loans or Federal Work Study aid must be sent in writing to Financial Aid Services at [email protected] from your FIT email address.

FIT takes various measures to protect personal data, including fulfilling its obligations under federal, state, and local law, as well as under the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation to the extent it is applicable. The GDPR provides protections for various information and records while a person is located in the EU. FIT provides notice to students, employees, and website users of what type of data FIT processes and how and why that data is used and shared through information posted on the GDPR page of FIT’s Privacy website. Please review the applicable notice(s) carefully. The Privacy website also contains useful information about other privacy policies, such as FERPA and Information Technology’s Privacy Policy, and terms and conditions for the use of the FIT website and social media.
