HS Animation, Interactive Media and Game Design Course Descriptions

Create animated content for the web. Explore career possibilities including being an animator, storyboard artist, creative or technical director, or effect artist. 

Please note: Not all courses are offered each semester


HGD 101 Digital Animation: 2-D Basics (Level 1)
Bring characters or graphic ideas to life with fundamental 2D animation techniques. In this class you will learn the basics of Adobe Photoshop and After Effects to create web-ready animations like those used in movies or everyday just-for-fun animated GIFs. (You can skip this summer class if you've already taken HGD 174)

HGD 174 2-D Animation (Level 1)
Used in producing movies and animated GIFs for the web, Adobe Photoshop is the software used by industry to create two-dimensional animations and to set up files to be animated in After Effects. In this course you will learn the basics of Adobe Photoshop for the first few days and then transition to After Effects to ultimately produce your own animations, text animations, and several other projects that may be used for portfolio submissions.  Gallery

HGD 175 2-D Animation (Level 2)
Prerequisites: HGD 174*
Used in producing television commercials, film credits, and web animations, Adobe After Effects is the software used by industry to create two-dimensional animations. You will produce your own 30-second narrative animation, text animations, and several other projects that may be used for portfolio submissions. Basic Adobe Photoshop knowledge required.  Gallery

*To waive the prerequisite for HGD 175, you may email [email protected] and state that you are familiar with the following: 
"I am familiar with the following basic skills in Adobe Photoshop: 
1. Basic layer management (moving a layer up or down in the layer window)
2. Basic use of the lasso tool
3. Basic use of the text tool (picking a font and or a color for the text)"
