This four-part professional development workshop series is geared towards our diverse campus community and is designed to prepare participants to handle different circumstances encountered every day. Sessions explore sexual misconduct, harassment, discrimination, cultural competencies, microaggressions, and how to use empathy as a tool.

Sexual Misconduct, Harassment, and Discrimination

An overview of FIT's policies and procedures under Title IX compliance, and exploration of what constitutes other forms of harassment and discrimination at FIT, including defining and understanding protected categories. We will define vocabulary, explain the reporting process, and run through typical scenarios surrounding these concerns.

Cultural Competencies

(Suggested prerequisite: Sexual Misconduct, Harassment, and Discrimination)

Introduces the concept of cultural competence by identifying the value of diversity while considering cultural histories and intersecting identities. We will use interactive exercises and small discussion groups to show how cultural misconceptions and problematic language can prevent an inclusive and welcoming community from prospering.

Implicit Bias and Microaggressions

(Suggested prerequisite: Cultural Competencies)

Defines and explores implicit biases and how they affect everyday communications and decisions, while offering realistic suggestions to alter unconscious behaviors. The focus will be on learning to identify microaggressions and using exercises to better understand how to respond to this type of bias.

Radical Empathy

(Suggested prerequisite: Implicit Bias and Microaggressions)

Increasing our understanding of what empathy is and engaging in activities designed to improve these skills for using empathy in everyday life, and understanding how radical empathy can be used as a tool for transformation.
