Biography

Barbara Seggio has more than 30 years’ experience as an instructor in FIT's Fashion Design Department. Her expertise is apparel, teaching all AAS levels of draping, patternmaking, and clothing construction. In the BFA degree program, Seggio oversees the children's wear specialization, including the senior thesis runway class. The work of Seggio's students has been showcased during FIT's annual Sustainable Business and Design Conference and published by various media outlets. As advisor for FIT's Fashion Design evening/weekend program, Seggio counsels students on course curriculum, application process, portfolio requirements, and student success.

Seggio is a co-inventor of the Baby Slip Tee, a garment designed to prevent babies from sustaining injuries should a parent fall asleep while breastfeeding. The project was funded by a grant Montefiore Hospital and resulted in FIT’s first ever patent, approved in November 2019.

Seggio is the editor and instructor of Sewing: Techniques for Beginners (Francesca Sterlacci, Laurence King Publishers, 2019) and Pattern Making: Techniques for Beginners (Francesca Sterlacci, Laurence King Publishers, 2019).

Grants

Montefiore Hospital, 2019, funding to design a garment to prevent babies from sustaining injuries should a parent fall asleep while breastfeeding. This project resulted in FIT’s first patent.
