The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in Cape Town, South Africa is the largest university in the Western Cape and the only university of technology in the region. Spring Semester: Applications reviewed and approved on a rolling basis through September 15
Note: Early applicants receive preference.
- Minimum GPA: 3.0
- Enrollment: Must be matriculated in a Bachelor's degree program
- Capacity: As an exchange program, it operates on a 1:1 ratio—meaning for every FIT student studying abroad, an international student studies at FIT. This limited capacity means spots can be competitive.
Additional Requirements by Major:
- Textile Development & Marketing
- Meet with an academic advisor and/or thoroughly review degree requirements in Degree Works
- Meet with an OIP program coordinator
- Obtain approval from the department’s international coordinator
- Students fulfill 4th semester major area, related area, and general elective courses by taking 37 - 40 SAQA credits within Term 1 and Term 2 of the second year of the Clothing and Textile Technology program. Students must also take at least 3 credits online at FIT while abroad.
- Students must take SC 147 before Semester 4.
- Eligible to participate in the 4th semester
A full-time semester credit load at CPUT consists of 60 SAQA credits. Only major and related area courses are available but students may take liberal arts or other courses online at FIT at no additional expense as this is an exchange program.
Specific academic calendar dates are not posted until closer to the beginning of term. Typically the CPUT calendar is:
- Term 1 & 2 (FIT Spring Semester): from late January through late May
- Term 3 & 4 (FIT Fall Semester): from mid September through mid December
Students are generally expected to arrive the weekend before orientation begins.
Students are responsible for making their own accommodation arrangements for the duration of their stay. Students may apply to live in CPUT residences or search for a privately-rented home with support from CPUT Connect.
Students will be required to apply for a Study Visa for the duration of their stay in South Africa. CPUT will provide supporting documentation and instructions after admission.
FIT requires all students to be covered in the U.S. and internationally for the duration of their study abroad program. Students are automatically enrolled in the UHC Study Abroad Insurance, which is included in CPUT program budget sheet (google doc). This policy is SUNY-mandated, therefore, it cannot be waived.
The UHC Study Abroad Insurance is ACA compliant and students may waive the FIT Haylor Student Health Insurance using the Study Abroad policy.
Students are eligible for student support services offered to all CPUT students.
