Biography

Joseph Desler Costa is an artist, photographer, and educator based in New York City and Milan, Italy. His colorful and surreal photographs, films, and installations combine pop culture, personal narrative, and the glossy aesthetics of of commercial, fashion, and advertising photography to reveal the humor, strangeness, and psychological complexity of contemporary visual culture.

Costa has been commissioned by clients including Adidas, Chloé, The New York Times, Honda, Moderna, Nike, Gucci, Nordstrom, and Oakley. Artworks have been exhibited at the Aperture Foundation, the International Center of Photography, the Carnegie Museum of Art, Hauser & Wirth, and PhMuseum Bologna among others, and featured in publications such as T Magazine, ArtForum, Photograph Magazine, ArtNews, Der Greif, and Aperture.

Costa's debut monograph, Say Yes, was published by SPBH Editions & MACK Books in 2024. He teaches at FIT, the School of Visual Arts, Parsons, and the Istituto Europeo di Design in Milan.
