Equity & Inclusion Workshop Series 1.0

Required for all employees

This 4-part professional development workshop series is geared towards our diverse campus community and is designed to prepare you to handle the different circumstances that you encounter every day. We will explore sexual misconduct, harassment, discrimination, cultural competencies, microaggressions, and how to use empathy as a tool.

Equity and Inclusion Workshops Sexual Misconduct, Harassment & Discrimination

An overview of FIT's policies and procedures under Title IX compliance, and exploration of what constitutes other forms of harassment and discrimination at FIT, including defining and understanding protected categories. We will define vocabulary, explain the reporting process, and run through typical scenarios surrounding these concerns.

Cultural Competencies

(suggested prerequisite: Sexual Misconduct, Harassment & Discrimination)

Introduces the concept of cultural competence by identifying the value of diversity while considering cultural histories and intersecting identities. We will use interactive exercises and small discussion groups to show how cultural misconceptions and problematic language can prevent an inclusive and welcoming community from prospering.

Implicit Bias & Microaggressions

(suggested prerequisite: Cultural Competencies)

Defines and explores implicit biases and how they affect everyday communications and decisions, while offering realistic suggestions to alter unconscious behaviors. The focus will be on learning to identify microaggressions and using exercises to better understand how to respond to this type of bias. 

Radical Empathy

(suggested prerequisite: Implicit Bias & Microaggressions)

Increasing our understanding of what empathy is and engaging in activities designed to improve these skills for using empathy in everyday life, and understanding how radical empathy can be used as a tool for transformation.

Equity & Inclusion Workshop Series 1.0 FAQ

All faculty and staff are required to complete this workshop series.

Participants must be present for 75% of each workshop session in order to receive credit for attending that workshop. Participants need to attend each workshop in order to complete the workshop series. 

No, at this time you only need to complete the series once. 

The workshops are offered a few times per year, virtually via Google meet. Workshops will be announced in advance, via email.  

Upon completion of the workshop series, Adjunct Classroom Faculty and Part-Time Classroom Assistants are eligible for compensation: 
38.10 Effective March 26, 2009, adjunct classroom faculty shall receive one half (1/2) of their hourly rate for each hour spent attending mandatory training. Such training shall include Sexual Harassment Training, Occupational Safety and Health Training (OSHA), and any training required by federal law, state law and organizational policy.  

Equity & Inclusion 2.0 Workshop Series

Optional for All Employees

This 4-part professional development workshop series has a focus on building intercultural competencies as a continuation of 4-part Equity & Inclusion workshop series. The format is similar, in that these are meant to be interactive workshops that spark introspection and conversation. We will take a deeper dive into some of the concepts previously discussed, while introducing other topics that are relevant to our FIT community and our society.

Cultural Competencies 2.0

Expanding on our capacity and awareness by exploring cultural appropriation, ethnocentrism and ableism.

Gender 2.0

(suggested prerequisite: Cultural Competencies 2.0)

Exploring gender identity and experiences historically and within societal constructs.

Systemic Racism

(suggested prerequisites: Cultural Competencies 2.0, Gender 2.0)

Increasing our understanding of and ability to identify systemic racism and barriers that exist within our society.

Anti-Racism & Allyship

(suggested prerequisites: Cultural Competencies 2.0, Gender 2.0, Systemic Racism)

Identifying differing forms of racism, defining the actions behind allyship, and creating action plans for transformative change. 

Equity & Inclusion 2.0 Workshop Series FAQ
