Biography

Soroush Marouzi is a historian and philosopher of science with a special interest in economics. His research focuses on the nature and value of human rationality. As a historian, he studies conceptions of rationality that emerged in Britain in the wake of the Great War and the perceived role of rationality in shaping and improving economic and political life. As a philosopher, Dr. Marouzi builds on this historical research to explore the epistemology of rationality, with particular attention to the role that habits play in rational life.

Dr. Marouzi joined the department of Social Sciences in fall 2025. Before that, he was a research fellow at the Center for the History of Political Economy at Duke University and a James Buchanan Fellow at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. He conducted archival research at several institutions, particularly at the University of Cambridge, with the support of various research grants. Recent awards include the JHET Early Career Scholar Award from the History of Economics Society and the Gilles Dostaler Award from the European Society for the History of Economic Thought.

Teaching is deeply meaningful to Dr. Marouzi. He finds it incredibly rewarding to see students gain confidence in their ability to think clearly, articulate their ideas, and engage thoughtfully with complex issues. As a philosophy teacher, he does not see his role as that of someone who possesses the truth and simply delivers it to students; rather, he views the classroom as a collaborative intellectual space in which we work together to question assumptions, examine arguments, and move closer to understanding what is true and worth believing. Supporting students’ intellectual growth and helping them discover the relevance of philosophy to their own lives is one of the most fulfilling aspects of Dr. Marouzi's work.
