Timeline for Strategic Plan Refresh and Mission Statement Review

April 2012

  • President Brown announces the formation of a Planning Council to oversee the refresh of the 2005 strategic plan and review the mission.
  • Anthony Knerr & Associates (AKA) is engaged to facilitate the strategic plan refresh and mission statement review processes.

May 2012

  • May 1 - Planning Council kick-off meeting. Planning Council reviews 2005 strategic plan and identifies initial strategic issues to address in refreshed plan.

Summer 2012

  • AKA conducts interviews with internal and external constituents to identify key strategic issues and ideas about FIT in 2020 and beyond.
  • Working hypotheses document is prepared for review and discussion at Fall Planning Council meeting.
  • Initial plan for community engagement in the strategic planning/mission review process is developed.

September - October 2012

  • Interviews continue with faculty.
  • Focus groups are conducted with students.
  • September 21 - Planning Council meeting. Council discusses initial working hypotheses; reviews time table for strategic planning process; and reviews plan for FIT community engagement.
  • Working hypotheses document is revised for review and discussion at next Planning Council meeting.

November 2012

  • November 2 - Planning Council meeting (cancelled due to hurricane).
  • November 30 - Planning Council meeting (rescheduled). Council discusses revised working hypotheses; identifies topics for exploration in sub-committees; and reviews sub-committee work plan.

December 2012

  • Sub-committees are formed and co-chairs named.
  • Initial strategic planning framework is prepared for review and discussion at next Planning Council Meeting.
  • December 3 - Strategic planning discussion conducted with Extended Cabinet.
  • December 14 - Planning Council meeting. Council discusses initial strategic plan framework, including potential overarching strategic goals and preliminary strategies. Sub-committee membership announced.
  • December 14 - Sub-committee chairs meet to discuss plan for their work.

January 2013

  • Strategic plan framework is revised for review and discussion at next Planning Council meeting.
  • Sub-committees meet and prepare to report to the Planning Council on their initial meeting discussions.
  • January 14 - Board of Trustees retreat (focused on strategic planning).
  • January 17 - Planning Council meeting. Council receives updates from sub-committees; receives a summary of feedback from the Board of Trustees retreat; reviews plans for April community engagement activities; and discusses the revised strategic plan framework.

February 2013

  • Plans for April community engagement activities are finalized.
  • Sub-committees continue to meet and prepare reports to the Planning Council. Final reports are due March 1.
  • Strategic plan framework is revised for review and discussion at next Planning Council meeting.
  • February 19 - Planning Council meeting. Sub-committees present initial reports and Council discusses revised strategic plan framework.

March 2013

  • First draft of full strategic plan is prepared, incorporating initial recommendations from sub-committees.
  • March 1 - Planning Council meeting. Sub-committees present final reports and Council discusses first draft of strategic plan.
  • Draft strategic plan is revised into penultimate draft.
  • March 14 - Planning Council meeting. Council reviews penultimate draft of strategic plan and reaches consensus on revisions necessary prior to release to FIT community.
  • Draft strategic plan is revised and released to FIT community for review.

April 2013

  • Draft strategic plan is posted on FIT website for comment.
  • April 2 - First faculty and staff dinner for discussion of draft strategic plan.
  • April 17 - Second faculty and staff dinner for discussion of draft strategic plan.
  • Summary of community feedback is prepared for review by Planning Council at next meeting.

May 2013

  • May 1 - Planning Council meeting. Council discusses community feedback and reaches consensus on revisions necessary to finalize the strategic plan.
  • Final revisions are made to the strategic plan.
  • May 17 - Planning Council meeting. Council discusses final draft of plan and approves for submission to FIT Board of Trustees.
  • Strategic plan is finalized for presentation to the Board of Trustees.

June 2013

  • June 5 - Mission statement and refreshed strategic plan are presented to Board of Trustees for approval.
  • Mission statement and refreshed strategic plan are communicated to internal and external constituents.

Summer 2013

  • Committees are formed to prepare operational plan.
  • FIT Report Card Task Force is reconstituted to review and update metrics for ongoing monitoring of the refreshed strategic plan.
