HFA 023: Basic Drawing (updated 9/18/18)
First day supplies:

  • 18” x 24” all purpose paper pad
  • Pencils: B, 2B, 3B
  • Pencil sharpener 
  • Erasers: kneaded, Art Gum, rubber

Additional Materials:

  • Compressed charcoal  
  • Conte crayons: red, black, white
  • Sanding block or sandpaper

HFA 024: Basic Life Drawing (updated 9/18/18)

  • 18"X 24" sketch pad
  • Pencils- 4B, 6B, 8B (Ebony pencil)
  • Peel sketch charcoal
  • Large vine charcoal (soft)
  • India ink
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Pencil sharpener
    • Medium sized Japanese brush (optional)
    • Compressed charcoal (soft) or Char-Kole (optional)
    • Pink Pearl eraser (optional)
    • 1 can final fixative or hair spray, water-soluble colored pencils (optional)
    • Watercolor paper pad 12 sheets (optional)
    • Small all-purpose sketchbook that is easy to carry (optional)

HFA 097

  • 3 bricks of Roma Plastilina clay #1 (if #1 isn't available #2 is fine) OR 2 Boxes (5 lbs. each) Claystone Air-Dry Clay (Red or Gray)
  • 10 X 12 inch board (or similar size)
  • Set of clay modeling tools

HFA 100 Bridging Painting and Drawing

  • 18"X 24" Bristol paper pad heavy weight 50 sheets
  • 2 Compressed charcoal sticks
  • 1 6B Pencil
  • Pink pearl eraser

HFA 141 

  • 18"x 24" pre-primed canvas or canvas board
  • Pencil or charcoal stick
  • Eraser
  • Acrylic paints
    • Primary Colors: titanium white, cadmium yellow, cadmium red light, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue, black.
    • Secondary Colors: thalo blue and green, earth colors (such as ochres, siennas, and umbers
  • Brushes: 1”, ½” bristle brushes, one small white nylon sable brush
  • Miscellaneous:
    • Paper palette
    • Two small paper cups
    • Pencil or charcoal
    • 9”x12” sketchbook for field trips

HFA 143 Architectural Rendering

  • One of each: 2B and 4B pencils
  • Pencil sharpener
  • 18" x 24" white drawing paper

*Additional supplies may be introduced by the instructor for purchase at the beginning of this course.

HFA 144 Intermediate Drawing 
Materials for the first day of class:

  • 18”x24” all purpose drawing pad (60 to 90 lbs.)

  • Vine charcoal

  • Conte Crayons (red, brown, black, white / optional are additional colors)

  • Mars eraser

Additional materials will be discussed in class based on student interest and progress

HFA 145: Design, Composition, and Color Theory (updated 9/18/18)
Materials for the first day of class:

  • Paper to use for sketching (9X11 or similar size)
  • Watercolor pad or sketchbook (11 X 15 or similar size)
  • Black and white acrylic paint
  • Something to use as a palette
  • Paint Brushes- A variety of sizes, one ¾-1 inch flat wash brush and acrylic flat or round brushes, #’s 0, 2, 4, 6, any or all if possible (no bristle brushes please!)

Additional items to be discussed in class:

  • Start collecting magazines for collages
  • Foam core (for mounting)
  • Color Wheel (any type)
  • Pencil
  • Erasure
  • Compass
  • Glue Stick or double-stick tape
  • Scissors
  • Exacto Knife with blades
  • Ruler (12 inch cork backed metal)
  • Acrylic Paint: Cadmium Medium Yellow, Cadmium Light Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, Red, Alizarin Crimson, Magenta
  • Paper towels
  • Cans or large paper cups for water and brush cleaning
  • Optional: Color Aid Paper 1/2 size pack

HFA 147: Introduction to Painting  (updated 7/2/17)

    • #2 Pencils

  • Student grade watercolor set (Yarka or other)
  • Student grade acrylic paint set. (Blick or similar)
  • Watercolor brushes #8 round. (Princeton Value Pack Acrylic brushes or similar)
  • Plastic pallet knife

HFA 148: Fine Arts Portfolio updated 9/18/18)
Materials for the first day of class:

  • Soft, Medium and Hard charcoal pencils
  • Pink eraser 
  • 18 x 24 inch drawing pad
  • Plumb line (make one by tying a string to a ring of keys, a stone, or anything at all that has weight)
  • Foam core or other rigid board to back up the pad if it doesn’t have a strong rigid backing (and a couple of clips to hold the pad to the board.)

Additional items to be discussed in class:

  • 2 pieces of 18”x24” grey charcoal paper
  • 2 pieces 18”x24” color of your choice
  • Black India ink
  • Bamboo pen
  • Sumi Brush
  • Cups for water
  • Sanguine conte crayon
  • Optional: Watercolor or acrylic paint, brushes
