Visit the Library: FAQ

1. DO I NEED AN APPOINTMENT TO USE THE LIBRARY?

  • Appointment required for:
    • Former FIT students/alumni
    • Students, faculty, and staff from other colleges and universities
      If your college is in the NYC tri-state area, a METRO:Metropolitan New York Library Council referral card may be required in addition to an appointment. Ask your librarian or check if your school is listed here to see if you must get this referral card before your visit.
    • Industry and independent researchers
  • No appointment needed:
    • Current FIT & SUNY students, faculty and staff. Current, validated school ID is required.
      Upon arrival, stop at the Lobby Security Desk and show your SUNY ID.

 2. HOW DO I MAKE AN APPOINTMENT?

  • Submit an online Research Appointment Request form
  • No same day appointments.
  • Check our schedule to be sure the Library is open the day you are considering.
  • Be specific describing what you'd like to see or use. Your appointment request may be denied or delayed if you are not specific.
  • The Library grants access to qualified researchers after our determination that Library collections meet the researcher's specifically outlined needs.
  • The number of visitors per day is limited as is the number of visitors per appointment.

3. MY VISITOR APPOINTMENT REQUEST WAS ACCEPTED. WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING FOR ACCESS?

  • Visitors must bring an ID that meets FIT security regulations. Check our Library Visitor Acceptable ID list.
  • You must show your visitor appointment confirmation email to Security guards in the Goodman Center building lobby.
  • Current students & faculty at local or regional colleges must also bring a METRO referral card from your school library.

4. WHAT ARE THE VISITOR HOURS?

  • Appointments are available for any day that the FIT Library is open but visitor hours are more limited than general library hours.
  • If you have a confirmed appointment, you may arrive only on the date indicated on your confirmation, any time from the start of visitor hours to 1 hour before the end of visitor hours.

5. HOW DO I CHANGE OR CANCEL AN APPOINTMENT?

  • Contact us by email at ask@fitnyc.libanswers.com or call the Research Services Desk at 212.217.4400.
  • To change the date for an appointment you’ve already missed, submit a new Research Appointment Request form. You may add a note mentioning your original appointment.

6. IS THERE WIFI? ARE THERE COMPUTERS FOR VISITOR USE?   PRINTERS?   SCANNERS?   PHOTOCOPIERS?

  • WiFi:
    WiFi access is available. Request login information at the Research Services Desk, 5th floor.
    You will not be able to connect to printers when you use your own device.
  • Computer:
    Request login information for visitor computer at the Research Services Desk, 5th floor.
    Use of library computer is for research purposes only.
    Due to limited resources, we may restrict the amount of time a visitor may use our computers.
  • Printers:
    Visitors can print from visitor computers (for a fee), but you are encouraged to bring a USB/flash drive to save your information at no charge.
    Visit the Research Services Desk, 5th floor, for more information or to get a refillable printing/copying card
    You will not be able to connect to printers when you use your own device.
  • Scanners:
    Free-standing scanners (no charge) are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
    Due to limited resources, we may restrict the amount of time a visitor may use our equipment
  • Photocopiers:
    Photocopiers (for a fee) are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

7. WHAT MATERIALS ARE RESTRICTED AND NOT AVAILABLE TO VISITORS, INCLUDING FORMER FIT STUDENTS / ALUMNI?

  • Because of licensing restrictions, some print and online materials are for use by currently-registered FIT students and faculty only--no exceptions.
    These include:
    • Current print and online forecasting & trend services (Doneger Creative Services, WGSN, etc.)
    • Some media and market research studies (MRI+, Mintel, etc).
  • Check Databases for Visitors for a list of online resources that you will be able to access if you visit the FIT library (list subject to change).

  • Contact us if you are not sure if we have what you need or if you will be allowed to use specific materials or services.

 8. DO VISITORS, INCLUDING FORMER FIT STUDENTS / ALUMNI, HAVE ACCESS TO LIBRARY DATABASES?

  • Visitors have access to many (but not all) of our databases on campus only, through our Databases for Visitors page; use out visitor computer (first come, first served) or your own devices (request WiFi and visitor computer login information at the Research Services Desk, 5th floor).
  • Because of licensing restrictions, some databases are for use by currently-registered FIT students and faculty only--no exceptions. These include online forecasting & trend services (Doneger Creative Services, WGSN, etc.) and some media and market research studies (MRI+, Mintel, etc).
  • Only current FIT students, faculty & employees can access FIT databases remotely. See Online Resources for Non-FIT Students and Other Libraries You Can Use for alternate recommendations.

9. CAN A VISITOR, INCLUDING FORMER FIT STUDENTS / ALUMNI, BORROW A BOOK, A MAGAZINE, OR OTHER ITEM TO USE AT HOME?

  • Visitors may only use materials in the Library; borrowing for use outside the Library is not permitted.

10. DO I NEED TO BRING A METRO REFERRAL? WHAT IS IT?

  • METRO (Metropolitan New York Library Council) referral card program allows library users from a participating member college or other institution to have access to another member library’s collections for items not available at their own library or at the New York Public Library.
    A METRO referral card is for a single day's visit and for on-site use only of books or other items.

    Current students & faculty at local or regional METRO (Metropolitan New York Library Council) participating colleges must:
    • Request an appointment to visit the FIT Library using our Research Appointment Request form
    • Obtain a METRO referral card from your college library before your FIT Library visit
    • Turn in your METRO referral card at the FIT Library’s Research Services Desk (5th floor)
