Contact us by email at [email protected] or call the Research Services Desk at (212) 217-4400. To change the date for an appointment you’ve already missed, submit a new Research Appointment Request form. You may add a note mentioning your original appointment.
3. Does the library provide wifi for visitors? Can visitors use the computers, printers, scanners, and other equipment?
- WiFi access is available. Request login information at the Research Services Desk, 5th floor. You will not be able to connect to printers when you use your own device.
- Request login information for visitor computers at the Research Services Desk, 5th floor. Use of library computers are for research purposes only. Due to limited resources, we may restrict the amount of time a visitor may use our computers.
- Visitors can print from visitor computers for a fee, but are encouraged to bring a USB/flash drive to save information instead of printing. Visit the Research Services Desk, 5th floor, for more information or to get a refillable printing/copying card. You will not be able to connect to printers when you use your own device.
- Free-standing scanners are available for no charge on a first-come, first-served basis. Due to limited resources, we may restrict the amount of time a visitor may use our equipment
- Photocopiers for a fee are available on a first-come, first-served basis, but users are encouraged to bring a USB/flash drive to save information using our free scanners instead of photocopying. Visit the Research Services Desk, 5th floor, for more information and to get a refillable printing/copying card. Due to limited resources, we may restrict the amount of time a visitor may use our equipment
4. Do visitors (including former students) have access to library databases? Are there restrictions on materials?
- Because of licensing restrictions, some print and online materials are for use by currently-registered FIT students and faculty only---no exceptions. These include (but are not limited to) current print and online forecasting & trend services (Doneger Creative Services, WGSN, etc.) and some media and market research studies (MRI+, Mintel, etc).
- Check Databases for Visitors for a list of online resources that you will be able to access if you visit the FIT library (list subject to change)
- Only current FIT students, faculty & employees can access FIT databases remotely. See Online Resources for Non-FIT Students and Other Libraries You Can Use for alternate recommendations.
- Contact us if you are not sure if we have what you need or if you will be allowed to use specific materials or services.
5. Can visitors (including former students) borrow a book, magazine, or other items to use at home?
Visitors may only use materials in the Library; borrowing for use outside the Library is not permitted.
6. What is a metro referral and do I need one?
The METRO (Metropolitan New York Library Council) referral card program allows library users from a participating member college or other institution to have access to another member library’s collections for items not available at their own library or at the New York Public Library. If you are a current student or employee at a New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut college or university, check if your school is a member. If it is, you will be required to get a referral before you visit the FIT Library. A METRO referral card is for a single day's visit and for on-site use only of books or other items.
Current students and faculty members at METRO colleges must:
- Request an appointment to visit the FIT Library using our Research Appointment Request form
- Obtain a METRO referral card from your college library before your FIT Library visit (it's a good idea to check your own library before you request an appointment as you may have access to materials or services that you didn't know about)
- Turn in your METRO referral card at the FIT Library’s Research Services Desk on the 5th floor
