April 2018: Prevention is Possible

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Education Month (#SAAM); join the FIT community for a series of programs as we support this national campaign.

Monday, April 2
The Clothesline Project - Day One
Dubinsky Lobby (Style Shop side), 10am-2pm
FIT supports The Clothesline Project, a visual display that bears witness to relationship violence. During the public display, a clothesline is hung with shirts; each shirt is decorated to represent a particular person’s experience, by the survivor themselves or by someone who cares about them. Join us to help educate, document, and raise society’s awareness of the extent of the problem of relationship violence. Create a shirt to help with the healing process of those who have lost a loved one or who are survivors of violence. Shirts will be prominently displayed in the Dubinsky Center Lobby during the month of April and in the Feldman Center Lobby during the first week of April. Students will be able to see their newly made shirts exhibited at FIT's Yards for Yeardley event on Tuesday, April 17th (Rain date for the event is April 24th).

Tuesday, April 3
The Clothesline Project - Day Two
Dubinsky Lobby (Style Shop side), 12pm-4pm

Thursday, April 4
The Clothesline Project - Day Three
Dubinsky Lobby (Style Shop side), 12pm-4pm

Thursday, April 12
Protection and Self-Defense Workshop
Breezeway, 12pm-2pm
Do you know how to defend yourself in a threatening situation? Learn basic methods of self-protection at this workshop led by George Francisco, associate assistant professor in Political Science and seasoned practitioner of Chinese Hawaiian Kenpo martial arts, along with his team from the Chinese Hawaiian Kenpo Academy.

Tuesday, April 17
Yards for Yeardley & Sexual Assault Awareness Resource Fair
Breezeway, 9am-4pm (Rain Date: April 24)
Join the One Love Foundation and the State University of New York in our campaign to go "Around the World for Yeardley" in honor of Yeardley Love and other victims and survivors of relationship abuse. SUNY campuses across the state will organize campus Yards for Yeardley campaigns with the goal of reaching 50 million yards, or "Around the World for Yeardley" as a SUNY community. FIT invites you to join our community as we walk together to support the One Love Foundation. The walk will begin and end in the Breezeway, with a loop around the FIT block. There will be giveaways, prizes, and snacks for participants! Be sure to take a lap and enter to win a prize via your raffle ticket!

During the Yards for Yeardley Event, we ask that you stop by our Sexual Assault Awareness Resource Fair taking place from 9am to 4pm in the Breezeway. Join the FIT community as we take a united stand against sexual assault. Resources and important information will be made available by members of local community agencies and organizations who provide services and assistance to survivors of sexual assault and violence.

Wednesday, April 25
Denim Day
All Day
"Denim Day is a worldwide initiative to prevent sexual violence and to enforce the message that 'consent has nothing to do with what I wear.' This campaign originally began in 1997 when the Italian Supreme Court overturned a sexual assault conviction because the justices felt 'the victim's jeans were so tight, she had to help remove them, thereby consenting to sex.' The following day the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol to protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault." For this event we ask that all members of the FIT community make a social statement with their fashion by wearing jeans on this day as a visible means of protest against the misconceptions that surround sexual assault. The information provided here is taken from denimdayinfo.org.

All you need to do to participate is wear denim jeans on April 25th! We invite all FIT community members to come pick up a Denim Day NYC button or patch between 12 noon and 2pm in the Breezeway. Renegade PR will host a Denim Day Fashion Show at 1pm in Breezeway.

Sexual Assault Awareness Education is brought to you by the Campus Anti-violence Education Group and sponsored by the FIT Security Advisory CommitteeDivision of Enrollment Management & Student Success, Department of Athletics and Recreation, Residence Hall Association, and more.
