SXK 101 Introductory Jewelry Techniques I
Jewelry crafters looking to develop higher-caliber pieces and students who have completed JD 101 successfully hone basic skills in a studio environment. Learn to use professional tools and techniques, working on basic filing, sawing, and soldering skills. Learn studio safety, maintenance, and cleanliness. Proper design elements and use of metals and stones are taught as well as basic sketching techniques. SXK 101 is held in an FIT Jewelry Design studio room with some tools available. Required text: 101 Bench Tips for Jewelers by Alan Revere.

Bring to first class: set of six needles file cut #2, 1 ½ round hand file school grade cut #0, 3 sheets each wet/dry silicone carbide paper 220,420,600, one sheet each 3 X 3, 18 gauge brass, copper and nickel, one saw frame 4”, two dozen #0 saw blades, set of six drill bits, one center punch, one asbestos free soldering pad, one solder pick, solder tweezer and sticker, jar Dandix Paste flux, one sheet each easy, medium and hard solder, polishing kit (wheels only), flex shaft chuck key and mandrels (2 split, 1 screw), square, ruler, divider, eye protection and (optional) one sterling silver bar stock square rod 3/16, 6.5 mm-8.5 mm. These supplies can be purchased at All Craft Tool 135 West 29th Street, second floor, 212 279-7077.

SXK 103 Introductory Jewelry Techniques II
Prerequisite: SXK 101 or JD 101 or permission of the instructor.
Building on fundamentals covered in SXK 101, students select stones and build a piece of jewelry of their own creation. Design and execute your own sterling silver prong/wire-wrapped pendant with a cabochon or faceted stone, designing the back plate, creating and soldering wire, adding a bail and decorative elements such as twisted wire, pickling, pre-polishing, stone setting and final finishing. SXK 103 is held in an FIT Jewelry Design studio room with some tools available. Students choose material at their own level of expense.

SXK 214 Solitaire Ring Making Part I: Setting Stone
Jewelry crafters and students who have completed JD 101 or JD 214 learn how to construct single-stone solitaire rings in this hands-on workshop. All phases of ring fabrication are covered, including methods, techniques, and procedures. Stone selection is discussed along with fabrication choices, thickness and dimensions. Work concentrates on head and prong choices and construction of the setting. SXK 214 is held in an FIT Jewelry Design Studio room with some tools available. Students choose material at their own level of expense.

Bring to first class: One dozen jewelers saw and saw blades sizes 3/0, 4/0, assorted escapement jewelry files no. 8 , 6 , 4 cuts and larger hand file assortment, fine point non-fire placement tweezers, fire tweezers, charcoal soldering block, 1.3 mm square .925 silver wire, approximately 3 inches, 1.3 mm thick .925 silver plate one inch by one inch, (students working in platinum should bring same metal sizes as above in platinum, as well as tungsten tweezers, zircon soldering block, welding #5 glasses, platinum solder 1700, 1600, 1500), 3ct - 6ct faceted stone of your choosing, assorted silver solders IT, Hard, Medium, solder shears, dividers, sticky wax, bench brush. Digital calipers are recommended and Optivisor or magnifying lenses, if needed. Also photos of single stone solitaire rings for discussion.

SXK 216 Solitaire Ring Making Part II: The Shank
Prerequisite: SXK 214 or JD 214 or permission of the instructor.
Building on fundamentals covered in SXK 214, students concentrate on making ring shanks (bands). Discussion revolves around choice of fabrication suitable for mounting solitaire settings, including metal choices, thickness, dimension and sizes. Students construct a shank using base metals and mount a setting, then learn professional polishing techniques. For those seeking a jewelry design career, construction of the solitaire ring is one of the most common bench tests a jeweler is asked to perform when applying for a position. SXK 214 is held in an FIT Jewelry Design Studio room with some tools available.
