Professional Advancement Pathways

Faculty success is a priority for the Office of Faculty Development. Here you will find information on tenure and promotion, sabbaticals, leadership opportunities, and other avenues for securing professional advancement at FIT, including SUNY's Center for Professional Development.

You are always welcome to schedule an appointment with Brian Fallon to discuss T&P and other opportunities for leadership and advancement.

Tenure and Promotion

FIT has a three-year track to tenure that involves a series of 6 reappointment meetings (see Reappointment, Tenure, and Job Security: Faculty). Faculty hired at the rank of Instructor are eligible for automatic promotion to Assistant Professor after reaching the final step of Instructor. Faculty may be considered for a merit promotion only after meeting the requirements outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (see Promotion). Below you'll find links to applications for tenure and promotion.

» Classroom Faculty Tenure Application

» Nonclassroom Faculty Tenure Application

» Promotion Application

It's highly recommended that you review these applications early in the process to understand what needs to be accomplished to successfully submit your dossier. Please review the Faculty Handbook Appendix A (starts on p. 59) to learn more about the requirements for appointment, tenure and promotion across different schools and divisions at FIT.

Leadership Opportunities

Leadership and service are key components in T&P success. Faculty Senate offers opportunities for faculty to run for committees and lead in shared governance processes.

»  Faculty Senate Get involved in faculty by attending meetings on the third Thursday of the month during the semester and running for committees. Add your voice to the conversation and support processes that ensure academic excellence by serving on a Faculty Senate committee.

» Chairs Handbook Learn more about the responsibilities of department chairship.

Opportunities to serve your department or school on committees that include T&P, curriculum, assessment, accreditation and strategic planning also exist. Talk to your chair or dean about opportunities to serve on special committees.

Nominate yourself to serve on committees:

» Diversity Collective To express interest in joining, reach out to one of the Chairs in your area.

» Faculty Development Grants and Awards Committee You can run for this committee during the Faculty Senate elections.

» Sustainability Council Learn more about becoming a member of the Sustainability Council.
