Current/Returning Students: Submitting an Application

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

IS HOUSING GUARANTEED?

Housing is not guaranteed.  We have approx. 1,000 spaces for current/returning students. Applicants with lottery numbers 1-1,000 will be CONFIRMED for housing and entered into the Kaufman Hall room/roommate selection process.  All other applicants are placed on a waitlist and may not be requested as roommates in Room/Roommate Selection.

WHAT IS THE BINDING ONE-YEAR HOUSING CONTRACT?

Students contracting for campus housing accept and commit to their accommodations for the entire contracted period (Fall and Spring semesters).  This contract does NOT include winter or summer semesters.  Students who withdraw are liable for any financial penalties incurred as a result of terminating the contract.

I ONLY NEED HOUSING FOR THE FALL SEMESTER.  ARE THERE EXCEPTIONS TO THE BINDING ONE YEAR CONTRACT?

A student may request release from their contract only for the following reasons:

  • Graduation from the College in December
  • Death of an immediate family member/guardian
  • Long-term hospitalization of the student or other extenuating medical condition
  • Entering military service
  • Acceptance into a College-approved study abroad program
  • For these exceptions, students must submit an online withdrawal form for spring semester by December 1st.  The student bears all responsibility for officially requesting release from the housing contract.

IF I WANT TO WITHDRAW FROM HOUSING, DO I GET A REFUND?

With the exception of the circumstances listed above, students who withdraw are liable for any financial penalties incurred as a result of terminating the contract.  The student bears all responsibility for officially requesting release from the housing contract. Withdrawing from the university does not automatically cancel the housing contract. For detailed information, please review our Withdrawal Request and Refund Information.

I ALREADY LIVE ON-CAMPUS.  DO I NEED TO COMPLETE AN APPLICATION?

YES; all residents must re-apply for housing annually.

HOW DO I APPLY?

To submit your application and non-refundable $500 credit card deposit, simply log-in to MyFIT > Click Student Tab > Scroll down to Housing/Residential Life > Click Fall/Spring Application > Choose “Apply Online” > Select Current/Returning

WHEN SHOULD I APPLY?

Applications will be accepted beginning 1pm February 28, 2017 until 1pm March 2, 2017..  Students who submit an application during this time period will be entered into the housing lottery.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?

FIT students must maintain 12 or more credits to be eligible. Students who are graduating in December or part of a one-semester exchange program are eligible. Students ineligible for housing through FIT’s Conduct/Judicial system will not be offered accommodations.

WHAT IS THE $500.00 NON-REFUNDABLE HOUSING DEPOSIT?

A $500.00 NON-REFUNDABLE housing deposit is required in order to complete & submit your application. Only credit card payments will be accepted. This is NOT an additional fee and will be credited towards your total housing charges.

WHAT HAPPENS TO MY $500.00 DEPOSIT IF I DON’T RECEIVE A HOUSING ASSIGNMENT?

If FIT is unable to offer you on campus housing by the start of the fall semester, your deposit will be credited to your FIT student account.

HOW WILL I KNOW IF I’M CONFIRMED FOR ON CAMPUS HOUSING OR PLACED ON THE WAITLIST?

All applicants will receive an email indicating their lottery number and their confirmed or waitlisted status by 5pm on Friday, March 3.

WHEN AM I BILLED FOR HOUSING?

Though housing contracts are binding for one full academic year, confirmed applicants will be billed for one semester at a time.  Housing charges for fall will be posted to student's FIT account after room selection in June; spring charges will be posted to their account in November.

For applicants confirmed for on campus housing, please review instructions on Room/Roommate Selection process.

For waitlisted applicants, please review information on Waitlist FAQs.
