Governor Cuomo's State of the State Address

January 5, 2012

Because FIT was created by members of the fashion industry in order to educate new talent for the workforce, and because the college continues to successfully fulfill this mission for a wide and ever-growing spectrum of professions, I am particularly pleased by Governor Cuomo's public recognition of the SUNY colleges as drivers of economic development and a critical component in rebuilding a healthy New York.

The expansion of the NYSUNY 2020 Challenge Grant Act to include all SUNY campuses is indeed excellent news, both for the colleges and the future of our state. Grants of $20 million each to three colleges will go a long way toward helping the State University of New York prepare students to assume their position as the next generation of professionals contributing to the vitality of New York State.

Finally, I am grateful to Assemblymember Sheldon Silver for his pledge to increase the states support of SUNY's community colleges. Because the states community colleges, including FIT, provide with so many essential members of the workforce, it is critically important to ensure that community colleges are affordable.

My thanks to both Governor Cuomo and Assemblymember Silver for their recognition of the importance of the SUNY system and their commitment to ensuring that the 64 SUNY colleges are able to continue to act in the best interests of students and the state.
