Designer & Books Fair
Date/Time/Location: Friday, October 2, 6 - 9pm; Saturday, October 3, 11am - 7pm; Sunday, October 4, 11am - 6pm; Katie Murphy Amphitheatre and John E. Reeves Great Hall

The three-day event, presented by Designers & Books and the FIT School of Art and Design, features more than 70 publishers, book signings, and programs related to a variety of design disciplines: architecture, experience design, fashion, graphic design, interior design, landscape architecture, product and industrial design, and urban design. There will also be notable rare and out-of-print book dealers and established indie magazines.

On Saturday and Sunday, in the auditorium adjacent to the exhibition hall, there will be programs featuring esteemed members of the design community. Topics will range from reflections on the careers of master designers to discussions of favorite books in personal libraries, to new design trends in the world of indie magazines to the increasing importance of Kickstarter as a way to launch design books. Speakers include Milton Glaser, Valerie Steele, Steven Heller, Louise Fili, and Wendy Goodman.

Attendees will be eligible for prizes, including private tours of the Yale Center for British Art, the Louis Armstrong House Museum, a Manhattan mural crawl, lunch with Andre Leon Talley, lunch at Pentagram, and a tour of FIT's Special Collections. 


A portion of the proceeds from the fair will benefit FIT's Gladys Marcus Library.

Twined Endbands: Weaving in Books from Eastern Mediterranean Culture

Georgios Boudalis studied fine arts in Thessaloniki and conservation of art in Florence and Athens, specializing in book conservation. He has worked in book conservation at the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki, Greece. His research aims to provide a better understanding of the evolution and making of the codex book in all its structural and decorative features, the influences between the different bookbinding traditions, as well as the influences of other crafts. Boudalis is a Research Fellow at the Bard Graduate Center through May 2015. While in residence at the BGC, he will continue his research on how different crafts have been assimilated into the making of the early codex book.

As the fashion business evolves into a more global and mobile business, so too are the skill sets required to keep the more than one trillion dollar industry moving forwards with innovation and newness. The Future of Fashion, presented by Fashion Institute of Technology's Jay and Patty Baker School of Business and Technology, Department of International Trade and Marketing, Library, and Sourcing Journal is an evening dedicated to shining a spotlight on the vast opportunities that extend beyond the runway available to the next generation of fashion leaders. From mass retailers to luxury brands, our panel of distinguished speakers will discuss how each sector of the fashion market sources its products. It all starts with crafting a strategic sourcing plan, selecting the right factories and logistical partners with the supply chain, and anticipating challenges faced by companies and retailers in global sourcing today.

Steven Kolb from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA)

Steven Kolb is the CEO of the CFDA. In his role, he oversees all operation and activities for the American fashion industry's renowned group of 470 American fashion womenswear, menswear, jewelry and accessories designers. Kolb manages the CFDA's membership, trade association activities and philanthropic initiatives. One of Kolb's largest contributions to American fashion has been his leadership role in cultivating the next week of emerging American fashion talent through programs such as CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund and the CFDA {FASHION INCUBATOR}.

3D Printing with the FabLab
The FIT Library and PrintFX FabLab invite FIT students to a workshop for those interested in the digital fabrication services of FIT's FabLab. The presentation will cover 3D printing capabilities of the FabLab, procedures and workflows, and an overview of common problems and challenges that may occur when 3D printing for the first time. Our goal is to communicate directly with students on how to properly submit a 3D printable file to the FabLab.
