International Applicants

We are proud to be a diverse institution preparing students for a global economy.
When applying to FIT as an international candidate, here are a few additional items to consider.

In order to be considered eligible for admission, you must have a U.S. bachelor’s or equivalent degree. Applicants who attended postsecondary institutions outside of the United States are required to have their transcript(s) evaluated by World Education Services (WES) or Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE)

Credential evaluations may be completed by other members of the National Association of Credit Evaluation Services (NACES), but WES and ECE are highly preferred. A course-by-course evaluation must be prepared for each transcript, and all schools listed on your FIT application and resume / CV must all be listed on your credential evaluation.

If admitted, your offer will be contingent upon receipt of unopened, official transcripts confirming issuance of your degree. You will be required to submit both the official transcript and its English translation before attending FIT. If the institution you attend does not provide an English translation with the official transcript, you must obtain a certified English translation. Failure to meet this requirement may prevent you student from attending classes.

Credential evaluations should be mailed to:
Fashion Institute of Technology
School of Graduate Studies
Room E-316
Seventh Avenue at 27th Street
New York, NY 10001

For questions or problems regarding document submission, please email the credential evaluation agency directly.

Please Note: Credential evaluations constitute non-binding advisory opinions only. Where FIT's assessment of any credential(s) differs from that of the credential evaluation agency, FIT makes all final determinations regarding course/grade/credit/GPA equivalencies, and degree equivalencies.

English Language Proficiency

Applicants who do not hold a baccalaureate degree from a college or university where English is the primary language of instruction, must take either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
Our most competitive candidates have a minimum TOEFL score of 80, and a minimum IELTS band score of 6.5. Should your scores fall below the minimums above, you are strongly encouraged to retake the exam.

English language test scores must be less than two years old in order for it to be considered valid.

For information about scheduling the TOEFL exam and obtaining score reports, visit www.toefl.org. In the U.S., you may call 1.609.771.7100.
For information about scheduling the IELTS and obtaining score reports, visit www.ielts.org.

Applicants who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. must provide a permanent home mailing address outside the U.S. Please provide a temporary mailing address where you wish us to mail correspondence. You should also indicate whether you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

F-1 Status

International students requiring F-1 student status to study at FIT will need to submit the International Student Financial Statement (ISFS) after they have been admitted. This is the only document accepted by FIT for issuance of the I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (F-1) Student Status), which is needed to apply for an F-1 visa.

For more information on obtaining an F-1 visa:

FIT reserves the right to revoke any offer of admission should discrepancies be found.
Any falsification of admission documents constitutes grounds for termination of application procedures or dismissal from FIT.
