Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When and where do I take the English and Math Placement Exams?
A: The exams are usually given in C614. Show up 15 minutes early for your exam.

Q: What identifications should I bring?
A: Bring your FIT photo ID if possible; if you do not have one yet, bring another photo ID such as passport or a driver’s license. Please have your student ID number with you as well.

Q: How do I pay?
A: You do not have to bring cash or a credit card to pay for the exam. A $25 dollar fee will be charged to your FIT account.

Q: How long does the exam take?
A: Allow two hours for the English Placement Exam. Allow one hour for each Math Placement Exam (if you are taking more than one).

Q: Can I use tools to help me with the exam?
A: You cannot use a calculator or a dictionary during the exam. You cannot use a smartphone either.

Q: Can I use the restroom during the exam?
A: Yes.

Q: Can I re-take the placement exams if I don’t like the results?
A: No, you can only take the placement exams once.

Q: Can I use the English and Math Placement Exams to override my SAT or ACT placements?
A: No, you cannot use the English or Math Placement Exams to replace SAT or ACT scores.

Q: When will my placement exam results be available?
A: The results should be available within two business days.

Q: Where can I find out my results?
A: Go to the FIT website ( and click “My FIT.” Log in to the system with your name and password, then click the “Student” tab on the upper left side of the screen. From there, click “Online Information System.” Next, click on “Placement Exams.” Finally, click on “Scheduling and Results.” Your results should be visible.
