FIT Students Win Second Place at 2010 World Retail Congress

A team of four recent graduates from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York, representing the United States, took second place in a competition against teams from six other leading international colleges at the 2010 World Retail Congress (WRC).† As part of the WRC, a global executive retail conference, the FIT team competed in the second annual Retail Futures Challenge in Berlin, October 25-27. †

FIT alumni Melanie Guardino, Ashly Juskus, Kimberly Karseboom, and Samuel Bauer also competed against teams from the Fashion Retail Academy, London; Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong; Rikkyo University, Tokyo; Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Melbourne; University Institute for Modern Languages, Milan; and the Welingkar Institute of Management, Mumbai.† The team from Rikkyo University, Tokyo, took first place. †

Each team was asked to develop a concept for a retail store that captured the essence of their home city to present at the WRC to an audience of global industry leaders.† The conference was scheduled to be held April 21-23 but was postponed due to the disruption of international travel resulting from a volcanic eruption in Iceland.

The FIT students, who graduated in May 2010, were given time off from their jobs and postgraduate studies to travel to Berlin.† The Warnaco Group provided travel expenses for the team and Professor Robin Sackin, chair of FITís Fashion Merchandising Management program. †

Additionally, FIT was represented at the Congress for the second consecutive year by WFIT, the collegeís student-run broadcasting club.† The World Retail Congress commissioned WFIT to cover the events and create videos to be posted on the WRC website.
