Art & Design Contest Winners

COMMUNICATION DESIGN

•   Abingdon Theatre Poster Contest

The winners of the poster design contest for HOW I FELL IN LOVE:

Top Prize: ($500, + $1,000 to complete the job) Joe Riccio, Professor Hammill's class

Second Prize: ($150) Elizabeth Balmaseda, Professor Hammill's class

Third Prize ($100) Dan Littlewood, Professor Bacsa's class

For the first time, we'd like to add a few honorable mentions (no cash prizes, alas) Amandi Brandi, Professor Hammill's class Laura Dezimm, Professor Shamir's class Helen Kim, Ron Bacsa's class. We will be making a $250 donation to the Jerry McDaniel Scholarship fund.

•   Students Patricia Brinkman, and Benjamin Morejon were selected as they demonstrated their sense of creative design while Kaitlin Delcampo and Daniel Littlewood were chosen for their functional interface; which produced a user friendly environment; they will work with JWT and SUS webmaster to build the site.

•   Anna Burns from Professor Birgit Schwarz Hickey’s AD 213 Advertising Design Concept class, won a $ 300 prize in creating the best design for a poster/postcard for our neighborhood youth theater, titled TADA!. The title was "Rabbit Sense", a New Orleans based story of a little rabbit growing in spirit, for his accomplishments and kindness he’s providing for his friends! The design will be hanging on our info board tomorrow for review.

GRAPHIC DESIGN EVENING AND WEEKEND BFA PROGRAM

•   Instructor, Doug DeVita has hired student Nicole Young a BFA Graphic Design Senior, who was in his AD213 / Advertising Design Concepts class, to design the graphics for the Chinese portion of the marketing campaign of the Abington Theatre’s first show of the season titled THE NANJING RACE 

FASHION DESIGN

•    2011 AFT INTERNATIONAL FASHION SKETCH CONTEST
Jusill Carrol was the first place winner in the AFT International Fashion Sketch Contest.    

 

•    FIT STUDENT INTERVIEWED BY TEENVOGUE.COM
FIT student Juan Mota was interviewed by TeenVogue.com for his participation in the PBS show Design Squad Nation’ where he worked alongside Christian Siriano.  The show aired in February during New York Fashion Week. http://www.teenvogue.com/careers/2010/11/design-squad-nation-juan-mota

 

•    FIT students from New York, Milan and Florence won 2nd, 3rd and 5th prizes respectively, in the All Japan Fashion Teachers Contest.

•    FIT students were awarded the following from the Fashion Group International’s competition: In the category of Women’s Ready-to-Wear: 1st -place cash award, including a 3-week internship with WGSN, 2nd and 3rd place finishes; In the category of Women’s Casual Sportswear students placed 1st , 2nd, and 3rd.

•    Sixth semester intimate apparel students participated in the Invista International Contest sponsored by Invista Mills. An FIT semi-finalist will attend the Paris show in September to compete with three other finalists from international universities. An FIT student was runner-up, another received honorary mention.

JEWELRY DESIGN

   

•    The Jewelry Design Department held a competition sponsored by Ms. Judith Ripka, of Judith Ripka Creations, NY, NY.  The competition was to create a new look for Judith Ripka, utilizing her traditional/recognizable design philosophy and elements.  A final selection of 12 students were chosen to participate and submit their designs.  Several design and merchandise meetings were held both at FIT, and the Central design offices at Judith Ripka, to introduce and show the array of Judith Ripka designs over the years and to discuss inspiration and materials.  The final selection and presentation of first and second place was held at a reception hosted at Ms. Ripka's flagship retail operation on Madison Avenue, NY.  Present were the 12 participants, mentor Prof. Leila Tai-Shenkin, Ms. Judith Ripka, Mr. Brian Ripka, president of Judith Ripka Creations, and President Dr. Joyce Brown.  The winners were Ms. Yukyung In in First Place and Ms. Melissa Manks in Second Place, for their designs.

ILLUSTRATION

•    The Illustration department recommended two students, Mara Cespan and Chase Stone, for an editorial job covering Alexander Joseph for Hue Magazine. Mara Cespon received the commission from Hue. 

PACKAGING DESIGN

•    Sixth-semester students competed as a class and won the top three places for the creation of innovative bedding packaging for CHF Industries, a leading marketer and manufacturer of fashion bedding, accessories and window curtains.

•    Sixth-semester packaging design students competed in design competitions for: MARS, Inc. (for a line extension for a brand of specialty gourmet chocolates), and, PITAYA Plus  (for a new beverage product produced by Fair Trade in Nicaragua).

•    Sixth-semester packaging design students completed an interdisciplinary project with the photography BFA students, whereby packaging designers art-directed photographers on a brand of baking products.

•    Sixth-semester packaging design students are beginning an interdisciplinary project with the cosmetic and fragrance marketing BS students, whereby CFM students developed the marketing concept for a brand, and the PK students are designing the brand packaging.
