FIT STUDENTS SHOW SCOTTISH STYLE
AT LAUNCH OF FASHION DESIGN CONTEST

The first look at cutting-edge Scottish-themed designs by Fashion Design students at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) was revealed on Thursday, November 19, at the launch of “City Meets County, Scotland Means Style,” a competition sponsored by Scottish Development International (SDI), the investment and trade promotion agency of Scottish Enterprise, the economic development agency of the Scottish Government.

FIT students majoring in Fashion Design were asked to create three storyboards, one each for eveningwear, sportswear, and city wear, inspired by the beauty of Scotland’s landscape. From these submissions, twelve designs will be selected at the end of November. The finalists will then execute their designs in their choice of fabrics provided by SDI from the mills of Reid & Taylor, Robert Noble, Johnstons of Elgin, Lochcarron of Scotland, Calzeat & Co, Harris Tweed Hebrides, Harris Tweed Textiles, Holland & Sherry, and Smiths of Peterhead.

Winners will be announced this coming March. The grand-prize winner will receive $1,000, plus the opportunity to spend a week with one of Scotland’s leading textiles companies.

Additionally, all twelve finalists’ garments and display sketches will be exhibited in New York during Scotland Week in Spring 2010, as well as in Scottish Parliament in Summer 2010.

Commenting at the launch of the competition in New York, Lena Wilson, chief executive of Scottish Enterprise, said, “This competition puts Scotland’s vibrant textiles industry at the very heart of one of the world’s leading design colleges.

“It raises awareness of Scottish product and celebrates the industry’s reputation for excellence, innovation and reliability. From stylish Scottish cashmere to beautifully crafted woven tweeds, the Scottish textiles industry offers unrivaled service and access to a wealth of talent and experience in design, fabric innovation and technical quality.”

"The entries took in every imaginable look, from voluminous ball gowns to funky golfing trousers," said Marilyn Hefferen, assistant professor in FIT’s Department of Fashion Design and contest coordinator. “We’ve had an overwhelming response from the students.”

Hefferen noted, “We teach them about Scottish textiles, and they’ve probably seen them before in the collections of designers like Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood. But this is a chance to see a huge variety of textiles up close and really work with them.”

Members of the judging panel include Sandra Murray MBE, Scottish designer to royalty; Lauren Milligan, fashion news editor, Vogue.com UK; Sue Stone, manager Harvey Nichols, Bristol; Brian Rennie, creative director, Gant; Malcolm Burkinshaw, head of fashion, Edinburgh College of Art; Bob Galbraith, sales director, Calzeat & Co.; and Eva Arrighi, group fashion editor, Herald & Times Group.
