Wonderful Metaphors
I want them to remember to look up. That’s what I think great poetry does. It causes people to look up from their feet, from their work. From their fretting.

A $150,000 National Science Foundation research grant, led by Professors Karen Pearson and Elaine Maldonado, seeks to improve learning outcomes for women in the design-related fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM fields).  The grant was awarded June 2010. The research will support faculty development and enrich curricula, building seamless bridges from high school-to-college-to-industry and graduating women better prepared to design, develop, and manufacture green and sustainable textiles, toys, home products, cosmetics, packaging, etc.

Science curricula for FIT’s 100-level courses in physical science, earth science and biology have been enhanced—with input from the project's industry advisory board—to support the needs of students entering today’s sustainability focused job market. New project curricula are being coordinated with science courses at the High School of the Fashion Industries. Sustainability Seminars and pedagogical workshops for faculty are being conducted by outside experts on topics such as “How Girls Learn Science” and “The Reflective Teaching Portfolio.” Professors Pearson and Maldonado presented findings at the 2010 NSF-ATE Directors' Conference and at the 2011 SUNY-STEM Conference. The project continues through 2012. Please visit http://www.tech-fit.net for a full picture of project achievements.
