Graduate Student Wins Elizabeth Arden Contest

"A shopping bag is a walking advertisement,” says Mary Beth Mazzotta, vice president of sales and marketing services at Elizabeth Arden. “If the design and execution are appealing enough, a woman will carry it with her everywhere she goes.”


With this in mind, Arden partnered in spring 2008 with FIT’s graduate program in Exhibition Design on a student competition to create a holiday-themed shopping bag for the retailer’s newly reopened flagship Fifth Avenue store. The winning design, by Chen Lin He (also an Interior Design BFA grad), depicts the store’s façade on a wintry day.

Students were feted at a private showing of their designs in the store in May 2008; all entries remained on display for two weeks thereafter. In addition to having his winning design produced, He received $5,000 to attend the exclusive Gravity Free Design Innovation Conference in Chicago. “Every young designer dreams of attending,” he says. “Thanks to this competition, I will experience this dream.”
