FIT will hire interpreters from outside agencies/companies to fulfill student’s needs when necessary, but there is lead time required to secure interpreters.
Procedure for requesting interpreter services
- Provide request in writing (email is fine) at least 48 business hours in advance of date needed. A student’s responsibility includes planning and time management, so schedule appointments in advance, coordinating your need with the Office of Disability Services.
When you need to have a meeting on-campus: for example, with the Financial Aid Office, the Career Services Office, your academic advisor, your professor etc., schedule an appointment building in the 48 business hour notice to FIT-ABLE to secure the services you need. If you need an interpreter for your tutoring sessions, please follow the procedures listed below in requesting an interpreter.
The 48 business hours notice does not include weekends. For example, if you need an interpreter on Monday and you put through a request on Friday evening, this is not 48 hours notice because FIT-ABLE is not open on Saturday and Sunday.
2. When requesting an interpreter, you must provide ALL of the following information:
The day and date of meeting/event/class
The beginning time of meeting/event/class
The end time of meeting/event/class
Your preferred language (ASL, English-to-English, etc.)
The exact location where the interpreter is to meet up with you (do not simply say “the Library”; tell us where – “in front of the elevators on the 5th floor”, “at the Director’s office on the 5th floor”, “on the 6th floor, librarian’s desk”, etc.)
