Math Placement Exam & Exemptions

THE ARITHMETIC AND ALGEBRA PROFICIENCY TESTS
(including the FMM Math Placement Test)

Arithmetic proficiency is a graduation requirement for the AAS degree at FIT. Placement into the proper mathematics course will assist students in successfully mastering the skills needed to do well in all FIT majors. At FIT, placement is determined by:

  • The SAT Mathematics Exam, including the Essay Writing Examination; 
  • The ACT Mathematics Exam, including the Essay Writing Examination;

One of these examinations is required before a student can register for the appropriate math course.

The following charts will help detail where students can place:

SAT Mathematics for all majors except Fashion Design, Fashion Merchandising Management.

If you score:                   You will register for: 
440 and below   MA 001  
450 - 490   MA 002 
500 - 510   MD 008 
520 or higher MA 142, MA 161, MA 222: see Major requirements

SAT Mathematics for Fashion Design and Fashion Merchandising Management majors

If you score: You will register for:  
510 and below  MA 009: Fashion Design Majors ONLY
510 and below
 MA 005: Fashion Merchandising Majors ONLY
520 or higher   MA 142, MA 161, MA 222: see Major requirements

SAT Mathematics for BS (baccalaureate degree) majors of the School of Business & Technology.

These BS majors are: Advertising & Marketing Communications, Cosmetics & Fragrance Marketing, Direct Marketing, Entrepreneurship for the Fashion and Design Industries, Fashion Merchandising Management, International Fashion Merchandising Management/Florence and New York, Home Products Development, International Trade & Marketing, Production Management, Technical Design, and Textile Development & Marketing.

If you score: You will be registered for: 
550 and below   MA 003
560 or higher    MA 213, MA 231,MA 311, MA 321, MA 331: see Major requirements 

ACT Mathematics for all majors except Fashion Design, Fashion Merchandising Management.

If you score:                 You will be registered for:  
18 and below   MA 001
19 – 20    MA 002
21    MD 008
22 or higher  MA 142, MA 161, MA 222:  see Major requirements

ACT Mathematics for Fashion Design and Fashion Merchandising Majors

If you score:                You will be registered for: 
21 and below   MA 009: Fashion Design Majors ONLY  
21 and below 
MA 005: Fashion Merchandising Majors ONLY

Once the Placement Center has received your SAT/ACT scores, you may register for the appropriate Mathematics courses.

If you are not pleased with your SAT/ACT score, you should make arrangements to retake the exam through College Board.

Other Possible Exemptions from the Arithmetic and Algebra Proficiency Tests:

A grade of C or better in college Algebra, Quantitative Methods, Pre-Calculus or Calculus taken at another accredited college or university or passing grades in equivalent Developmental Mathematics courses offered at another accredited college or university.

International Students:  Since you do not take the SAT or ACT exams, you will need to take the FIT math placement exams before registering for any math and science courses.
