Math Placement Exam & Exemptions
(including the FMM Math Placement Test)
Arithmetic proficiency is a graduation requirement for the AAS degree at FIT. Placement into the proper mathematics course will help you successfully master the skills needed to do well in all FIT majors. At FIT, placement is determined by:
- SAT mathematics exam, including the essay writing exam
- ACT mathematics exam, including the essay writing exam
One of these examinations is required before you can register for the appropriate math course.
The following charts help determine placement.
SAT Mathematics for all majors except Fashion Design and Fashion Merchandising Management

Once the Placement Center has received your SAT/ACT scores, you may register for the appropriate mathematics courses.
If you are not pleased with your SAT/ACT score, you should make arrangements to retake the exam through College Board.
Other Possible Exemptions from the Arithmetic and Algebra Proficiency Tests:
A grade of C or better in college algebra, quantitative methods, pre-calculus, or calculus taken at another accredited college or university or passing grades in equivalent developmental mathematics courses offered at another accredited college or university.
(If you have not taken either of these exams in the past five years, you must take the FIT placement exams before registering for English and math courses.)
International Students: Since you do not take the SAT or ACT exams, you will need to take the FIT math placement exams before registering for any math and science courses.
