Transfer Credits

Transfer Credit Guidelines

All transfer credits are approved and posted to your student record by the Registrar’s Office. You can check for your transfer credits online in MyFIT by selecting Academic Transcript.

If your former school says your transcript was sent to FIT and you do not see your transfer credits, check back in a week, as transcripts take some time to process. Please note transfer credits are all awarded with a grade of “T” for transfer and do not affect your FIT GPA.

When you apply to FIT you are required to disclose on the admissions application all previous colleges you attended. Colleges that are not stated on the initial FIT application will not be considered for transfer credit. Students are required to provide transcripts from previous colleges attended as part of the admissions process.

All transfer credits are approved and posted to the student record by the Registrar’s Office. Liberal arts transfer credits are evaluated and approved by the Registrar's Office in consultation with appropriate liberal arts departments if necessary. Major or related area transfer credits are evaluated and approved by the major department. Students should contact the major department upon their initial arrival on campus to arrange an appointment for a review of major courses for possible transfer credit. In addition, a department may request additional information on learning outcomes of the course as well as a sample of student work in a portfolio.

Transfer credit is awarded only for course work similar to courses required for your current FIT degree and only when official transcripts and/or score reports have been submitted for review.

Restrictions on the amount of transfer credits
As a transfer student, you must be aware of the academic residency requirement that you take a certain number of credits at FIT.  This may limit the amount of transfer credit that can be awarded:
  • AAS degree students must complete a minimum of 30 approved credits, including at least half of the credits required in the major area, while in degree status at FIT
  • BFA/BS degree students must complete a minimum of 60 credits, including at least half of the credits required in the major area, while in degree status at FIT

Check transfer credits in MyFIT

Before registering, check your transfer credits.  To ensure that your transfer credits are applied to your FIT record, make sure that all final, official transcripts have been sent to FIT.

Transcripts for admitted students should be sent to:

Registrar's Office
Feldman Center, Room C158
Fashion Institute of Technology
227 W. 27th St.
New York, NY 10001-5992

To check your transfer credits, run your degree audit (DARS) in MyFIT.   A degree audit is a computer-based assessment that shows the progress you’re making toward meeting your degree requirements. Any course granted as transfer credit will be printed with a T grade on your degree audit in the appropriate place for the requirement. See the SC245 transfer credit in the sample below.
