Men's and Women's Swimming
The Fashion Institute of Technology swimming and diving team has made a big “splash” in the NJCAA, despite being established only three years ago. In the team’s inaugural season (2008-2009), they placed 3rd at the North East Regional Championship and 9th in the country at the National Championship. During the 2009-2010 season the team finished 3rd again at the North East Regional Championships. At the National Championships, four of FIT’s relays finished in the top eight and nine swimmers finished in the top 16 in their events, resulting in a 7th place National Championship finish. In the 2010-2011 season, FIT impressed again at the NJCAA National Championships, with multiple personal best times, and a 9th place overall finish, 3rd place among non-scholarship schools.
Although the team has often been small in numbers, it has always been big in talent and heart. Not only is the swim team a great place for practice and competition, the athletes have always developed close friendships through many hours in practice and traveling together. Michelle Welles (2010-2011) says, “the team is a big family. We all support each other and cheer each other on no matter what. Swim meets and practices are always so much fun, there’s never a dull moment.”
The Tiger’s begin their 2011-2012 season led by captains Mackenzie Jameson, Alan Lopez, and Kate Maldjian. FIT is looking forward to growing as team as well as reaching their full potential as swimmers. Their season will be spent practicing in anticipation for the Regional Championship in Rochester, NY and the NJCAA National Championship in March 2012 in Fort Pierce, FL.
“I look forward to an exciting season. I hope that we reach our own personal goals as well as reach an overall goal as a team. We are hardworking and determined, let’s make this season count.” –Mackenzie Jameson, Captain (2011-2012)
FIT Swimming is under the leadership of Head Coach Daniel Hekman and Assistant Coaches Gwendolyn Kittell (FIT, 2010) and Campbell Gray. The team practices and competes each season from October to March. Swim practices are held at the Borough of Manhattan Community College on four days per week.
