FIT in Milan

International Fashion Design (IFD) in Milan and New York

The FIT International Fashion Design in Milan program provides a study abroad opportunity for BFA students to study fashion design in both the U.S. and Italy. The international dimension of the two-year program requires that students reside in Milan for one year, studying in English at the Politecnico di Milano (Polimi), and to reside in New York City for the other year, studying at FIT. Students may opt to study in Milan or NYC during either their third or fourth year.

In these two international cities, students follow a specialized program focusing on the unique dynamics that characterize the differences and similarities between European and American fashion.

In Italy, students have access to trade shows, cultural events and field trips to Italian mills and factories. An intense mandatory week of fashion study in an additional European capital further broadens the students' perspective.

In the third year of the program in Milan students can follow the Knitwear, Sportswear, or Children’s Wear specializations of the Fashion Design BFA program. During their fourth year in NYC, students complete their required specialization courses along with most General Education courses.

Only the Sportswear/Children’s Wear specializations are offered in the fourth year of the Fashion Design BFA program in Milan. The fourth year of the Knitwear specialization is not offered. The program structure provides full academic credit toward degree requirements.

The FIT International Programs Office will assist you in applying to the program and preparing to live abroad -- helping you with housing, visas and a general orientation to living in Italy.
