ESL Summer Program
Do you want to improve your English language skills? Are you interested in fashion design, promotion, retail buying or the beauty business? Would you like to spend several weeks in New York City?
Then FIT’s ESL Summer English as a Second Language and Fashion Business Program is for you!
This summer, the School of Continuing and Professional Studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology is offering a unique English as a Second Language summer program. This three-week intensive session includes an ESL course, activities in fashion-business and design-related topics, and special events and field trips around New York City.

Program of Study
The curriculum is designed for students with intermediate or advanced English-language skills. The ESL course concentrates on oral communication skills and focuses on language relevant to fashion and design. Students are tested and placed at an appropriate level. An accelerated class featuring language and writing skills is available for those who qualify.
Afternoon and Evening Activities
Attendees choose from 4 separate tracks, either Track 1, 2, 3, or 4.
1. Fashion Design
Discover what it takes to be a fashion designer—from sources of inspiration such as the work of the great designers to color and fabrication to knowing your target customer. Experience the steps in planning an actual line.
2. Fashion Merchandising
Learn how buyers think, work, and are responsible for profit and loss by planning the right merchandise at the right price, time, and place. Shop the market like a professional and plan a jeans assortment for a hot retail store.
3. Advertising, Promotion, and Fashion Styling
Find out how ads and promotions are planned and executed. Experience the art of fashion styling as it is used in advertising, and participate in a live fashion shoot.
4. Global Cosmetics and Fragrance
Get a complete understanding of the international beauty business, how it works and who the important resources are. Visit top companies and retail stores and see how a beauty-product concept is launched.

FIT and NYC
FIT is located at the heart of New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood, a vibrant community that is alive with creative energy. The campus comprises an entire tree-lined city block and is within walking distance of Times Square, the Broadway theatre district, and Macy’s, and other landmarks and lively shopping and cultural centers.

Students are encouraged to arrive in New York City on Friday, June 26. Student orientation and placement begin on Monday, June 29 at 9 am.

ESL course: 9 am - noon
Activities: 1:30 - 4:30 pm
Special Events
June 30: Evening Business Panel
July 3: National Holiday, no classes but recommended activities.
July 7: Evening Track-Specific Event
July 9 & 10: Museum Visit and Field Trips
July 16: Final Project Presentation
July 17: Certificate Presentations
Field trips and special events are mandatory.
Cost and Housing
The cost for the three-week program is US $1,025 and includes the ESL course, activities, field trips, and special events.
Housing is available in four-person suites in FIT's residence halls. The cost for three weeks of housing June 25 to July 17 is separate from the program fee and is approximately US$1,367. To reserve on-campus housing, email Residential Life at summerhousing@fitnyc.edu. To guarantee your housing, you must apply and pay before June 20. On-campus housing check-in is June 25–26 from 9 am to 5 pm and departure is on July 17 by 3 pm.
Students will need to provide their own meals. The cost of meals is estimated at $30 per day.
