Being able to speak, read, and write English well will help you make the most of your college courses—but that’s not all. These skills are also essential to a successful career and a well-rounded, intellectually rewarding life. Educational Skills courses provide the skills you need to understand what you read and hear, and to express your thoughts clearly and effectively in speech and in writing. Whether English is your first language or not, the Educational Skills Department helps you strengthen your reading comprehension, grammar, listening, and note-taking skills.
Courses are designed for entry-level students as well as those who need assistance in such areas as:
- English as a second language (including pronunciation, oral presentation skills, and conversation)
- business writing
The Education Skills Department operates two academic centers:
- The Academic Skills Center offers tutoring in almost every course at FIT. Small-group sessions are free to FIT students. Walk-in services are also available.
- The Testing Center administers placement tests in English, arithmetic, and algebra.
In collaboration with FIT-ABLE, the department also provides a range of services for students with documented learning disabilities.
