NOTE: These instructions are for portfolio preparation only. Do not submit or mail any portfolio items to FIT until you have applied and received your USERNAME, PASSWORD, and LOGIN INSTRUCTIONS in an email from the FIT Admissions Office.

Associate in Applied Science (AAS) Degree

The Textile/Surface Design portfolio submission consists of a design test, original artwork, and a written essay. We want to understand your creative process in both written and visual components. We ask that you put thought into your process and work to create original art that reflects your unique self-expression and special quirks. We want to see who you are in your design process. You are to create new projects for this test. Do not submit work done for other purposes. Because this is a test, we are unable to provide you with any additional information on how to execute the projects beyond what you receive here. Carefully follow instructions for each project.

PART ONE: Design Test 

PROJECT ONE:  FLORAL DRAWING TEST

Submit two (2) drawings of flowers, leaves, or plants. Drawings may be done on the paper of your choice. Medium may be pencil, color pencil, or marker. 

PROJECT TWO:  STILL LIFE COMPOSITION PAINTING TEST

Set up two still lifes with a minimum of three (3) objects in each composition. Choose objects that are natural or man-made with varied shapes and sizes. Work in color. Be sure to submit a photograph of your still life along with the sketch. Submit four (4) images.

PART TWO:  Your Original Artwork 

PORTFOLIO SUBMISSION

Provide 8-10 samples of your original artwork. This is your chance to round out your portfolio submission. What else about your artwork do you want us to know? What else do you want to show us? All work submitted should be either new or very recent. Submissions may be in a variety of media, examples may include artwork from the following categories: 

  • Paintings 
  • Knits and wovens 
  • Collages 
  • Drawings 
  • Computer assisted designs 
  • Screen Prints 
  • Printmaking

PART THREE:  Written Essay

In 500 words or less, describe what inspires you. (Choose from any combination of the following, examples may include: culture, art, music, film, fashion, politics, environment, literature, magazines, newspapers, etc.)

Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Degree

Your portfolio should consist of projects from your major art classes that reflect your knowledge, skill, and creativity in textile and surface design. After your application has been reviewed for eligibility, you will receive additional instructions regarding your portfolio.

FIT reserves the right to photograph and maintain a digital and/or slide file of artwork submitted by applicants for admission to the college.
