FIT Dominates CCRI Tournament to Claim Championship
By Carrie Thomas
(Lincoln, RI) The Tigers had a mission Sunday morning, wrapping up pool play and going to the championship match--WIN!
"It's why we practice the way we do--long and hard! These girls are tough! They have a "never say die" attitude and it shows on the court. No one intimidates them. We played all DII teams on Sunday and these girls rose to the challenge. They play with their hearts all the time. They have the drive and desire to win, no matter if they are ahead or behind. They keep fighting," said Coach Carrie Thomas. "I'm very proud of how they are playing as a whole unit. The communication, trust and skill are what win us games. And we have all three all of the time."
The Tigers finished up pool play dispensing of Gennessee CC 2-0 and Nassau CC 2-1. They were the only undefeated team in the tournament. FIT then had to play Gennessee CC for the championship title where they claimed their victory 2-1 (22-25, 25-21, 15-13). Anna Buckley dished out 65 set assists on the day. Megan Houff led the offensive threat with 26 kills. Rachel Carey and Vivian Htam pounded out 12 and 10 kills respectively. Alison Tyler defended the backcourt with 45 digs and Michelle Vainblat closed up the wing with 34 digs.
Tri-captain Megan Houff stated, "Although we were both evenly matched, I think our team was able to stay calm and better execute plays towards the end of the game when it mattered most. We kept a level head and were able to pull through tough situations, whereas Gennesee seemed to get frustrated and frazzled when things got out of control. On the volleyball court little things like that matter. Being able to execute plays are what matter." Captain Rachel Carey claimed, "We were just the more confident team. We are in these matches to win and we don't think anything other than that. We just win!"
