Communication Design Foundation

Creative thinkers, talented doers, imaginative innovators

Communication Design Foundation (AAS) program is a lower division program in the Communication Design department. Upon the completion of this lower division program, students are eligible for applying to the upper division of Graphic Design, Advertising Design BFA programs in the Communication Design department, or the Package Design BFA program.

Communication Design Foundation (AAS) program focuses on all visual imagery—both still and moving—that persuades, promotes, educates, and informs. In this program, you’ll study digital design, typography, color theory, and layout design, as well as presentation and web design—all vital skills for a successful career in this increasingly demanding and competitive field.

Because today’s marketplace requires multidisciplinary experience, you’ll master traditional design skills as well as the latest computer technology, and you’ll learn to develop conceptual ideas that lead to outstanding design.

New York City—the design capital of the world—provides the perfect complement to your classroom experience. You’ll explore the city’s unparalleled resources, take field trips to top design firms, and become immersed in the design industry—giving you the competitive edge you’ll need when you enter the field. You’ll graduate prepared for an entry-level design position or for further study in a related BFA program at FIT.

Highlights

  • A faculty of practicing professionals offers classroom experiences that mirror the real design world.
  • New York City is your extended campus, with leading design firms, museums, and galleries that provide rich resources for inspiration and opportunity.

In this program, you’ll:

  • be exposed to the industry through field trips and guest lectures. Speakers have included an interactive designer, a letterpress designer, and a filmmaker, and many industry leaders, such as Steven Heller, Takaaki Matsumoto, and Massimo Vignelli.
  • acquire a solid foundation for design, including the software used in the industry.
