FIT Receives Accreditation Status from Middle States Commission on Higher Education

The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) has received reaccreditation status from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Through a peer evaluation process, the non-governmental association awards accreditation to degree-granting colleges and universities in the Middle States region, which includes schools in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

FIT first received accreditation from the commission in 1957. FIT began its latest process of re-accreditation in November 2007. Under the guidance of Dr. Joyce F. Brown, president of FIT, the college engaged in a vigorous self-study review to document the development and implementation of organized and sustainable assessment procedures, and to gather evidence to improve its teaching, learning, and institutional effectiveness.

During the five-year process, FIT added its online offering of a BS degree in International Trade and Marketing to its self-study report and reclassified FIT’s collaborative program with Politecnico di Milano in Milan, Italy, as one of the school’s additional international instructional sites.

“I am delighted that FIT received the best possible action that the commission could take,” said Dr. Brown. “This could not have been achieved without the hard work and commitment of the entire college community.” FIT will begin its next review report to maintain its accreditation status from the commission in 2017. The full evaluation will be completed by 2022.

FIT is a leader in career education in art, design, business, and technology, with a wide range of programs that are affordable and relevant to today’s rapidly changing industries. Part of the State University of New York, FIT offers more than 45 majors leading to the AAS, BFA, BS, MA, MFA, and MPS degrees. In addition to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, FIT is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design and the Council for Interior Design Accreditation. The Museum at FIT has received the highest national recognition for a museum—accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums (AAM).
