Volleyball Sweeps Weekend Play at Rockland CC Tri-Match
The FIT Tigers were on a neutral court for two games, playing Suffolk and Queensborough on the floor of Rockland CC. The Tigers played their first match against Suffolk CC, outlasting the Sharks 3-2 (25-20, 25-17, 19-25, 27-29, 15-9). The marathon match proved to be the game that decided the first place spot in the region, as both teams entered undefeated. The Tigers then took care of Queensborough 3-0 (25-16, 29-27, 25-13) to improve to 17-2 on the season.
Against the Sharks, Megan Houff led the way with 29.5 points, recording 19 kills, 7.5 blocks and 9 digs. Rachel Carey followed with a 16.5 point effort on 14 kills and recorded a team high 25 digs. Sarah Weise had 11.5 points and Breana Dolan added 10.5. Lauren Curley had all 54 assists the team recorded in the match.
As a team, the Tigers recorded 21 team blocks and an attack percentage of .305. The team went into the game knowing it would be a tough match: “Coach always tells us to start strong and finish strong. We managed to get the first two games but eased up a little. It came down to the last set and everyone had to dig in and give everything, and we came together as a team and got the win,” said Rachel Carey.
The team’s second match of the day was easier, as Queensborough fell in straight sets 25-16, 29-27, 25-13. Houff was dominating again, recording 11 kills and 3 blocks. Sarah Grochowski had 15 digs to lead to team and Dominique Volker stepped up with 2 kills and 2 service aces.
“The girls played a great match after coming off a long, intensive match earlier,” said Coach Thomas. “They won the first set but the long match from earlier came back and it finally hit the girls in the second set. Not wanting another long match, the Tigers dug in and found the strength to power through the second set and then easily through the third. They worked extremely hard this afternoon.”
