FIT Cruises Through Semifinals but Falls in Region XV Finals

After sending BMCC home with a 3-0 win in the first round of the Region XV playoffs, the Tigers took on Dutchess CC in the semifinals held at Ulster CC.  The Tigers had already defeated Dutchess earlier in the season, and this match proved no different.  The Tigers came out 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-21) victors and stayed on the court to face Suffolk CC in the finals.  The Sharks got the better end of the match, defeating FIT 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-19).

In the semifinal matchup, the team started strong and never looked back.  Lauren Curley recorded 25 assists, Megan Houff had 14 kills and 6 blocks, while Rachel Carey added 9 kills.  Coach Thomas commented on the match, saying, We came into this game so fired up, knowing a loss would knock us out of the tournament.  From the sound of the first whistle the team played hard and never gave in.  Everyone on the team made a huge contribution to the victory.

Winning that match allowed the Tigers to move into the Region XV finals against Suffolk CC, a team that the Tigers defeated in 5 sets only a week earlier.  The Sharks avenged that loss, defeating FIT in straight sets (25-20, 25-19, 25-19).

Lauren Curley had another impressive game as the setter, recording 18 assists and 7 digs.  Sarah Weise recorded 3 blocked shots and Sarah Grochowski had 15 digs.

We came in feeling good after beating Dutchess, but we knew this game would be a tough one, commented Sarah Weise.  I think we let them get into our heads too much, as the game seemed to be more mental than physical.

Coach Thomas echoed those statements, saying I think we came into this game a little too pumped up.  We all wanted to win, but the girls just overplayed the match.  But the girls are an amazing bunch and they deserve all the success they earned this season.  I have never coached a group as amazing as this, from the players to the managers to the coaches; they have nothing to hang their heads about.

This proved a tough end to the season for the Tigers, who lost only two other times this season.  They came into the final match riding a 15 game winning streak, during which they dropped only 6 sets total.
