Department: Textile Development and Marketing
Initiative: Student Project: Design an Eco-Friendly Garment

Please describe your activity and its relevance to sustainability in the curriculum.
The topic of Sustainable Textile Product Development incorporates everything that goes into the development of a sustainable textile product-- from sourcing materials, production processes, standards & certifications, Fair Trade, and the marketing of the product. It includes all 3 aspects of sustainability: environmental, social and economic. "Design an Eco-Friendly Garment" is a student project I have been using with Fashion Design Students in their TS132 class,Introduction to Textile Principles for Fashion Designers, since 2007.

Briefly describe your experience implementing your activity.
This initiative has been effective because the students become involved in researching and supporting their decisions, ensuring that they take ownership of their project. I have found that many of the students are passionate about making a difference.

Based on your experience, do you have any suggestions or advice you might give to other faculty interested in incorporating sustainability into the curriculum?
Don't wait for the perfect assignment! Just start with an idea and it can be refined every semester.
